Does anyone else think the Williams should've had a 6th gear for motorway cruising? I have to drive like a granny every day to work to keep the fuel bills down! Even at 60mph it's at 3k revs! Is this common?

What it lacks on a motorway, it gains on the country lanes.

When Reno built it i don think Motorway confort was at the forefront of their mind. Winning rallies was. If you start compremising on cars abilities so its an all rounder, it will just end up like the present crop of warm hatches. The could have stuck a 6th gears in, and soften the suspension, and added abs and etc etc. Glad they didnt.

Hardcore all the way. 5 gears is fine.

They were sequential boxes jon. Hardly the same as adding an extra cog to a road car, which was the original question

Should the Williams have a motorway cruising gear?

Not

Shoulf the Williams be fitted with sequential boxes?

but they werent all sequential.......the early ones were std casing n rebuilyt inside to take 6 speed s/c c/r dog boxes

But im assuming that if they had six gears then they wernt a 'motorway cruising' economy gear? More of a rebuilt box, with different ratios?

I have no problem with 6 gears. I just dont see the point of putting an 'ecomony' gear on a hardcore hot hatch.

I thought the oribginal question was:

'Should the Williams have been fitted with a motorway, economy / cruising gear'?

To this my answer is no.

If i have missunderstood the question forgive me.

If the question was 'should the Williams have a 6 speed rally prepped box'?, then id say yes that would be cool.

What's the final drive on this thing? Think I won't mind one with very slightly taller final drive but 5 gears should be enough for me.

You're right about the country lanes, in fact I find myself avoiding the motorway altogether most days and going the back B-road way home, which is longer but a hell of a lot more fun!! It definitely wasn't designed for the motorway tho, I don't like to keep the revs above 3k on the motorway so find myself sat on the inside lane crawling between 55 and 60mph (until I get pissed off at all the chavs tryin to race me!)

lol.stromba.spose theres 2 ways of reading the q....1 is ur way 6th gear for economy/cruisin....and mine for 6th gear for motorway cruising .at more than 150 mph lol........depends on how u look at it tbh

the gears can be chosen to wotever ratio u want...u want a top speed of 120, with 6 gears gettin u there in 15 secs.u can have it, ..........u want 5 gears to get u to 120 in 15 secs u can have that too...but then u have 6th for over 120..up to woteva u want..the gear sets are built to ur spec, al u need do is give them ur bhp etc and what in gear speeds u wanna do...an theyl make u a gear set up to that spec

Jon, that bit of the question kind of gave me the impression he was asking if the Willimas should've had a 6th gear for motorway cruising

5th gear is pretty good in the Williams, isn't it?

I find it as good as 4th.. infact, I don't reckon there's much between them.

I had a GTi 6 before the Willy and I do miss the six speed 'box. Refined on sixth gear motorway cruises, nice long first gear to counter traction problems and gloriously short intermediate gears for those hardcore blasts through the gears. Lovely.

Daz - from what i've seen of other peoples williams' 5th gear doesn't seem as good as 4th, in martin's old one and monkey's as i had a vid of his on my phone in 4th the car pulls really well to 110 then pop it in 5th and you can see the speedo not wanting to move as fast, you can tell it's a longer ratio!

various gearboxes can be added to the williams, some madman fitted a diesel gearbox :-)..lol... some awesome speeds there...
megane 2.0l gearbox fits, just pull out the electrical sender and put in the mech drive one, 172 jc5, in fact most clio gbs fit...
you can pick up low mileage megane 2.0l gbs for next to nothing at scrappers...

ratios would be great to fiddle with them.. i'd shorten second and third and 4th and have a long 5th..
lol.

I am using the 16v box with the willy engine with standard rev limit, it still pulls hard in 5th but tops out on the limiter at ~130. Motorway driving is not really recommended lol.
