Apparently I have a cracked sump

There was me thinking it would be a simple bolt off bolt on job.

6hrs labour it will take to do it  plus £190ish for the part

So, does anyone know if it would take this long, or can anyone recommend anywhere in the NW that could could it cheapish?

Or should I just keep checking the oil and plop some new in when it needs it? It doesn't seem to have lost any.

Be careful. I know the Williams sump has cast markings on it that look like a crack. I had a garage tell me i had a cracked sump only for Nick Hill to tell me it was a cast marking.

Im not sure about 16v's but id check it is actually a crack and not a cast marking.

The fact you havnt lost any oil indicates it maybe a cast marking. Very rare to crack a sump unless you hit something, in which case you will know its cracked.

I trust this garage fella. They're very experienced in these matters, and have £000s of work on mine, Irish Nuts willy, The Kirmanators 16v and others.

Sounds like they've not done a sump before though, as I tihnk this figure of 6 hrs came off their system.

The garage i took my car to was a Renault specialist and i trusted them. They made a mistake.

They are saying you have a carck in the sump but youve lost no oil???? There would surely be oil around the crack if it was a crack.

For the 300 odd quid it will cost to change, I really recommend you check its not a casting mark.

It may have lost some. I did a change in Oct, but couldn't tell where the oil was on the dipstick as it was too clean to see! I just left it, knowing I'd put more in than the Haynes quoted.

Put another 3/4L in 2 weeks ago, after thinking that I'd check it now 'cos it'd prolly dirty enough to see!

I may well get under it and check though. Aren't the willy sumps different? I'm sure they're a baffled sump but the valver isn't.

Phone Nick Hill. He may shed light on this.

Never changed a sump......but 6 hours lol Its only about 20 bolts, a new gasket and oil?

Willy sumps are only a bit bigger and have abit more baffling than a valver one. you could use a willy sump on a valver. the baffling is nothing really compared to compotition sumps tho

The sump is protected alot buy the subframe, get under and have a look at the damage?

ah yes..but if i remember correctly.u have to take the engine off its mounts to get to all the bolts.......and they all torx bolts too...usually tite as **** as a bonus.....shitty job

2lives right. Read the Haynes and 2 mounts have to be undone and the engine hoisted a bit to get at 2 of the bolts.

Seems like very bad design. Someone on another forum has pointed out that since Renault rallied them you'd have thought parts like this would be more easily accessible so they can be changed quickly.

I'll just have to keep an eye on it, and bite the bullet at some point.

If there was a crack, how long would duct tape hold out? :D

Do this tonight:

Get under car and clean away all oil from the sump. Make is clean.

Then place a tray under the crack.

I bet there is no oil on the sump or in the tray tomorrow, as you actually are looking at a casting mark.

u can get some liquid metal .or metal paste.......not the best way to do stuff ..but it mite just hold it off if it is cracked

Also after you have cleaned the oil and placed the tray get the engine warm to thin the oil.

yo, i used this metal paste stuff.. it has held out for a year.. and doesnt look like failing....

you can hve it mig welded,....
ic ant remember the name of the metal paste, any enginneering works will know...
the willy sump is deeper for the crank clearamce....

TIG welded u mean

these engines use oil anyway...so if it was leaking you would definately notice!!

Parked it on the downward slope in the car park over night thinking the dry tarmac would show up any leaks.

It rained. Twatstards!
