what sort of play in the wheel are we talking about ?

Zollo

The left-right play in the steering. Wobble the steering wheel a couple of inches from side to side, and if the front wheels don't move, that's the play.

Any remote chance of doing mine before then? I've got a MOT on the 28th and I'm looking at a new steering rack if I can't get it welded before.

Can travel...

I've been informed so yes. I've also been told it's 'bloody dangerous' by a mechanic/friend

EDIT - there is a serious amount of play in mine, say about 3 inches or so

Justin..

No, you are looking at a new stearing column, £45 iirc from infinicar for a 2nd hand one, and myself and a mate fitted one in a few hours.

It is an MOT failure, can't see that its THAT dangerious though :?

 mine has play and its passed today :?

Lunner

Grasp the column in teh car above and below the universal joint and check for play that way, it will be apparent when twisting the shaft, if it has play it will move, if not then it won't.

Easier than trying to judge it from the wheel, as even on a new shaft you still ahve a little play int eh wheel, thatsh what the rubber joint that deteriates is there for, to stop the wheel being wrenched around over really bumpy roads

oh rite. i may not have one. i need a second opinion

If its passed i would say its fine tbh, if you take it to a garage and say i think my stearing column is gone can you check i'll beta fiver they will say its gone, just to get a few hours labour out of you....3 hours labour at £40 an hour....£120...plus the new part, whihc IIRC was around £190 from reno

just pull the column boot up and have a play with it, if like mine it wobbled all over and was feck all rubber in it then it needs sorting lol mine is welded up now, and the steering is 100% spot on(btw i fitted new tie rods and track rods at same time)
