If I unplug the fan-switch connector and put a voltmeter across the connector's female-ended terminals, should I get get 12 volts across it or zero volts?

not sure myself - but as the water heats up, the circuit should open and trigger the fan to cut in - but i could be miles wrong - ive never checked on tbh.

If I understand the way it works, the fan switch remains open until 92C. It then closes to activated the fan until the temperature drops to 82C (I am using the "hotter" fan-switch).

I am going to extend the wires slightly as, I believe, the connectors gets dislodge eveytime I send the car in for an oil/filter change (the wire hangs right over the oil filter - what a stupid design!). And yes, as per Gunnergibson fire hazard warning, I will be using 20amp rated wires.
