On the advice of a good friend of my girlfriend, who specialises in protecting computer systems from viruses, who incidentally runs a very large global website of his own, we installed an anti virus programme available free of charge...only free for individual users, not businesses.

This is called AVG, we were using Mcafee, which we had paid for, only downloading AVG, it found THREE Trojan Horses, which had hidden themselves in our PC. On his advice we then de-installed Mcafee, as two programmes running together would slow the PC down. I cannot recommend this FREE product highly enough....our PC is now clean and running faster than before, as having these viruses can severely affect the performance especially when using the internet.

Few more simple freeware that I use:
1) Spybot - Search & Destroy
2) Spyblaster
3) Spywareguard
4) Firefox browser/Thunderbird emailer
5) Tiny Personal firewall
And if you're geeky enough, you can remove Internet Explorer and Outlook Express using XPlite or 2000lite (but this costs USD$40).

You'd be safe as clams after this.
