Ive had a look around for a decent carbon bonnet, and it appears that carbonut have stopped manafacturing them.

So ive had another good luck around  , and to behonest - its not all that hard to make my own.

Its a time consuming excersize but who would be intrested in a williamsclio.co.uk one.

No idea of price - but if i could get hold of a metal bonnet that i could use as a pattern (and remove skin and frame), im in business. (bar ordering the fiber matting) :D

it would be a project over half a year for me mate - as most of my time is now taken up with renovating my house.

i know. I try and do everything the best i can....so quality wont be a problem...but learning the art of carbonfibre matting will be.

especially gettin the weave correct round all the bulges and vents....not an easy task with minor bulges n bumps etc..so the bonnet to get spot on is gunna be rock hard

i know mate.

got a book on how to create your own panels....if i ever finish one - mine will be painted so im not too worried tbh.

But if the F1 boys manage it - northy can. might start simple though 8)

How much is carbon fibre mat then? And do you just use glassfibre resin? I fancy getting my new bonnet done with carbon fibre, but i'd paint it probably.

See ya

depends on the grade and weave you use.

i'd be interested but would rather focus on weight/strength rather than look... so long as its smooth, because i will be painting it.

the weave pattern isnt just for show mate. thats where the basis of its stength comes from.i used to weave the stuff, as well as kevlar and nomex, to many differing grades, most of the stuff we did was used in the aero industry but we did supply for a few f3 f1 teams too, as well as for the kevlar , that was mainly for the forces, even had our own shooting range/test bed for the bulletproofness hehe

Theres a company in Dodworth just outside Barnsley does carbon fibre fabrication for race cars I can ask them about prices if you want Northy?

See ya

definatly mate - i think that learning to mould and lay carbon fiber for the first time on a 16V bonnet is asking too much.

If you go and see them, this is the shopping list.

full carbon fiber outer skin
full carabon fiber bonnet frame
fixing studs as per original design
latch as per original design
and to have a cuttout for the Renault badge

Good lad matt

I'll pop thru today check it out with them. I've heard they're good but not had any personal experience with them.

Right had a ride round.

Went to the place in Dodworth first, and they only do motorcycle fairings. They pointed me in the direction of a company called Composite Racing in Shafton (funnily enough only a mile from where I live and i'd never noticed it lol).

Anyway, if he has to make a mould the bonnets would work out about a grand apiece. However if we can provide a mould he'll lay one up and tell us the cost when one is done. He says somwhere around £400 each. However the more we need the cheaper it gets.

This is proper carbon fibre not the crappy japanese stuff with a layer of carbon fibre backed with fibreglass. Can't remember the exact name, carbon impregnated somat or other. Anyway its very strong and very very light. He has a 1600bhp Mustang which should be finished soon to run in the Street Eliminator. He's made a full carbon body for that, and me and my mate picked it up above out heads no problems. Think the full body weighed 17kg.

I can get him a bonnet.

But he will need to make a subframe, and outer skin.

Think the going price was around £350 before.

Good going mate - thanks for this :D
