Does anyone know what the little brown 2 wire connector plug at the back of the alternator is for? I bought a new alternator for my Willy2 online, looks the same but the new one has 1 wire to the brown plug, the old one has 2 wires.
There are some photos of them both attached.
Anyone know what this wire's for? will it hurt to run without it? Or do I need to ship it back?

It will matter, according the instructions for a Valeo one I've just bought.

The yellow wire is a 12v IGN feed or 'Exciter' wire, this basically tells the alternator to charge the battery. It won't if its not there.
The Green wire is for the light on the dashboard.

It is VERY, VERY important you get the correct Alternator. They can look the same but the regulators and power outputs can be totally wrong!

Either buy brand new - Circa £100
or you can get yours re-furbed, usually around £60.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks Peter, I'll have a tinker with it on the weekend. my old unit is seized but I was pondering on taking the regulator off the old one and and fitting it to the new one if it'll fit and still works?
The alternator was sold as the correct one, it came from Belgium so it'll be a nuisance and another delay to have to send it back. Cheers Stu W
