View Full Version : Breakdown!

Just driving along as usual, nothing out of the ordinary, suddenly the engine cuts out. I quickly try to start it but it won't even turn over. Then the break pedal locks up, I resort to using the handbrake to stop! Meanwhile the radio is going crazy by the looks of things.

I stop, turn on the hazards and open the bonnet - I notice a bit of smoke (?) coming out the top of the offside - seems to be coming from around the manifold area. Bit of a burning smell.

Currently waiting for breakdown rescue

Could this be an electrical fault? Maybe a wire burnt off and caused a short circuit?

the starter is down that side, but I don't know why the pedal would lock up unless its melted a rubber brake hose and its collapsed?

Might be the cambelt :( The recovery guy says it sounds typical of a breakage.

On a positive note, he was rather impressed with the rest of the car

I'm thinking cambelt. :-(

Wouldn't it have gone bang if the cambelt had gone? (They're not non-interference engines, are they?)

I didn't notice an immediate noise to be honest, the exhaust is rather loud anyway and there was a fair bit of traffic. I was behind a skip lorry so if there was a bang I might have passed it off as a noise from that.

Anyway I had a look and I think it might definitely be the cambelt; theres some black rubbery like residue around the edge of the cambelt cover which I haven't seen before

My 10 bent valves says they're very much interference engines

Now in the hands of Mark Fish

There was another Williams there, looked like a W2. No plates but had a private plate in the window (J8 xxx or something). Carbon boot trim, signs in the window saying no brakes haha

4 inlet and 2 outlet valves bent (or the other way around I think). It was the tensioner that gave way.

Water pump was about to fail too. One of the bolts on an engine mount had sheared (?) and so the engine had to come out the bottom. Driveshaft gaiter and alternator heat shield being replaced. Otherwise engine is in good nick apparently.

Rear offside wheel bearing had completely failed. Nearside rear axle slightly bent.

So, got her back yesterday!

Purrs like a kitten! And drives like a butterfly (can also sting like that other insect).

New straight rear axle and bearings mean it goes straight, and all the wheels are aligned properly. It's so responsive now it's hard to actually keep it going straight! Holds corners like it was made to 22 years ago, too.

Another superb job from Mark Fish and co, I totally recommend. All it needs now is front disks and pads (possibly rear disks too) and an offside handbrake cable, and mechanically it would be perfect.

Mark found a tube that drains the water from the windsheild/bulkhead and directs it away from the subframe, but the top half of the tube is missing. Does anyone have one spare?

I have a bent valve for keepsies, I'll post a photo when I get a chance. Engine bay is degreased too so it's nice and shiny (with a crappy spark plug cover of course)

Good oh....fair amount of time away but if it's a good job I guess it's not a prob. :)

This tube your speaking off - is it the central one under the fan motor that runs down the front of the bulk head.

If so I do have a spare I can grab for you

I think so, it's central and below the windshield, goes somewhere just behind/below the exhaust manifold.
