Hi,

I'm wanting to keep the original size tyres the Williams came with as new, but i'm struggling to find a good set. I'd ideally like Michelin ones as these came fitted as new, but what do you guys run? All iseem to find is 'everyday car' tyres at these 185/55/15 size?!

Remember, i'd like to keep it OE with the size on my standard wheels.

Cheers

Going on people's recommendations, I went with Michelin Pilot Exalto 2's, at 195/50/15... Seem to be fine!!

I believe the PE2's are no longer manufactured but they were available in 185/55. They've been superceded by Pilot Sports now so try looking for those

I've been looking everywhere for decent 185/55/15s and there are none of the decent ones around now that used to be - PE2s, F1s, etc :(

Has anyone had any experience of the ContinentalPremiumContact 5 (http://williamsclio.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=110&cart_id=89482889.110.20725&Breite=185&Quer=55&Felge=15&Speed=&Load=&kategorie=1&Marke=&ranzahl=4&tyre_for=&x_tyre_for=&m_s=3&Ang_pro_Seite=50&sort_by=Lable_2nass&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&filter_preis_bis=&filter_preis_von=&homologation=&search_tool=standard&Label=C-A-70-2&details=Ordern&typ=R-234203) or the GoodyearEfficient Grip Performance (http://williamsclio.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=110&cart_id=89482889.110.20725&Breite=185&Quer=55&Felge=15&Speed=&Load=&kategorie=1&Marke=&ranzahl=4&tyre_for=&x_tyre_for=&m_s=3&Ang_pro_Seite=50&sort_by=Lable_2nass&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&filter_preis_bis=&filter_preis_von=&homologation=&search_tool=standard&Label=C-A-68-2&details=Ordern&typ=R-234530)?

I noticed someone was running the Dunlop SP Sports but I'm not mad keen on the brand:

I'm running Goodyear Efficientgrip performances on all four corners on the 225. They're the best tyre I've experienced bar none, excellent in the wet.

I'll be putting the 185/55s on #360 without doubt.

I ran them on the 175 I had Paul and I couldn't fault them

Thanks for the replies, gents!

I might try the Goodyears, then, I've run F1s previously and been very happy with them so hopefully the EfficientGrips will be similar, if not quite as awesome when it's wet :) (Could drive like it was dry with the F1s on!)

I've just been having a quick look around for OE size tyres for someone & just about jizzed in my pants when I discovered that Yokohama AD08R's are available in 185 55 15

Lol

I went for 195/50/15 (oooops) Michelin Pilot Sport 3s in the end.

Are the PS3s good?

I think I've driven my brother's old Williams when it was on 195/50s and I didn't like the fact it felt less adjustable mid-corner, even though the difference seems marginal according to the numbers!

Brave if you're running those on the road!

Personally I don't think there's a better tyre than the AD08R for road use, very very good on track as well. A bit pants in the snow but other than that I can't reccommend them highly enough, now I know you can get them in 185 55 I'm getting some for my williams

Hmm, interesting... I've always viewed such an 'extreme' tyre as a liability in damp and wet conditions! But I have no experience of them so it's only a 'that looks slidey' gut feeling... lol

I recall evo magazine rated these or a similar pattern/compound as better than expected, but I just fear they would be very 'snappy' on the limit, either on or off with little 'grey' area in between that you can play with?

Entirely personally speaking, I'm not too concerned about getting the highest levels of grip in the dry, I rarely get the opportunity to drive at 10/10ths any more (booo) and the roads I usually use aren't clear-sighted enough to enable me to carry any real speed through them, but maximising grip in the wet gives me a lot of confidence, as does the ability to play 'over the limit' of grip. For example, Toyo Proxes T1-S in 185/55/15 were very grippy in the dry (in a straight line, anyway - they rolled over onto the sidewalls far too easily...), but as soon as it was wet they were very on/off grip.

I wish I had more cash to try out different tyres but it's the usual scenario of only having enough for one set! :-(

A mate of mine has used them through winter & was happy as a pig in shit with them

What the car's used for would be the deciding factor tbh, I don't fancy using them on a daily driver through winter, but for my williams, it wont ever see the road through winter & nor will my Accord although I am getting a set of AD08R's for that but I have winter tyres for it as well.

Using them on my track car as well & when I get round to getting full slicks the AD08's will be for wet use. I've found that the softer semi slick compound tyres also deal very very well with the wet, it's just standing water is where they get a bit lethal but it's not that much better with normal tyres

Cool, interesting stuff! :-)

The one thing I liked about the GSD-2 F1s was that you could just drive through standing water like it wasn't there

I have ps3's in the 195 flavour.. good tyre in wet and dry but then I don't drive it that hard.. very smooth ride out of them too...

Try it with winter tyres, it's ridiculous how well they deal with standing water & great for scaring the shit out of passengers

haha Nice, I may well do that if we get a decent winter this year that means winter tyres are needed! :-D
