Restoration Engine, Gearbox & Engine bay:

Engine, gearbox and front axle were expanded together.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/B8O83H.jpg

All attachments removed.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/qyeb20.jpg

Here is just a fraction of the new parts.
All in all, the complete restoration of the entire car required more than 1000 part numbers.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/Gb4HDf.jpg

Also from other manufacturers parts were needed.
For example, rubber grommets for the connectors on the cable harness
or here clamp brackets for the water hoses in all sizes from Volkswagen.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/EKh9Bj.jpg

All parts to be galvanized were blasted first. Then black passivated.
The front axle and the stabilizer were powdered black.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/sGYWDS.jpg

The front axle was reassembled.
Of course with new bearings, wishbones, bolts and nuts.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/Vz0Aj0.jpg

A known problem of the F7R engine has also just been eliminated.
The serration for the V-ribbed belt tensioner on the additional assembly carrier wears off over time.
This carrier is no longer available.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/qXHn3b.jpg

The cast aluminum spline was milled off and teeth made in steel.
Then bolted to the carrier. The problem is now solved permanently.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/yISq9D.jpg

The parts to be painted were also blasted first.
Furthermore, various aluminum parts on the engine and the intake bridge were blasted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/yPgGuz.jpg

The steel parts were painted. The wheel bearings were replaced a few kilometers before.
Therefore, they could continue to be used.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/vlB1ob.jpg

The engine block was cleaned, derusted and painted black with heat resistant paint.
The innards of the engine have been revised a few kilometers before. That’s why the engine was not opened.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/Q18YAS.jpg

The complete engine harness was cleaned, retied and fitted with new rubber sleeves for the connectors.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/2bYEiW.jpg

The harness was tied with fabric adhesive tape.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/7z6m0X.jpg

The new rubber sleeves. Ordered from Volkswagen.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/d7iUTt.jpg

The attachments of the engine were mounted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/8MJAId.jpg

The gearbox has been completely revised.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/ZUi4ai.jpg

All parts were cleaned, the housing blasted, and replaced all wearing parts.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/CyORnY.jpg

And reassembled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/VKoBtz.jpg

Almost finished.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/nEicIS.jpg

The fitted gearbox. It was also installed the Group N short shifter.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/MSCfAe.jpg

The gearbox was screwed to the engine.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/md24a1.jpg

The engine harness was led around the gearbox and other parts reassembled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/NUdW5o.jpg

The starter and various holders were reinstalled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/Lavuyh.jpg

The Engine and the gearbox were put back on the front axle.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/SkYMQQ.jpg

The steering has been reinstalled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/tAJS35.jpg

Other holders and water hoses found their place again.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/IwjubP.jpg

The devil group A complete exhaust system.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/xtLWv8.jpg

Retro pure!

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/w7xf0x.jpg

The manifold and the downpipe were mounted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/mXqHYH.jpg

The RSC Competition Pro PC57D-WS (Williams Special – blue gold) has been screwed on again.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/gdFXmW.jpg

The oil pipes from the steering were mounted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/eOjX8f.jpg

Now the engine bay came to it.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/bu3Qcq.jpg

All parts were removed for painting the engine bay.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/lRQPMe.jpg

The body was sanded…

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/TFibMc.jpg

… and covered.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/1ung3S.jpg

The engine bay was painted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/00kxmZ.jpg

The rear box was also in a second step…

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/w0pPxT.jpg

…painted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/vwna6T.jpg

Before the engine, gearbox and front axle were mounted, the wheel arches were also painted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/THPUxf.jpg

They were cleaned and painted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/lDgVFB.jpg

Ready for the wedding.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/KS7NHD.jpg

And already installed.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/8rKjQy.jpg

No comparison to before.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/OvXrPj.jpg

The crossbeam had also to be painted from the outside.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/xVAyQ9.jpg

And also the substructure of the bodywork from the outside.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/XHON79.jpg

The right side as well.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/QFaigr.jpg

Missing still the radiator and the ECU. Otherwise the complete restoration is finished up to the “windscreen”.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/lRBle8.jpg

It was still a Group N EPROM installed. Now the F7R turns up to 7400rpm and hangs a little better on the gas. The controller housing was also blasted and a new data adhesive was made. Of course with RSC logo.

Very nice 8-) especially like what you did with the ecu

Can you tell me what the finish is on the gearbox mounting bracket? I've been trying to get a finish exactly like that on mine but this is the 1st time I've seen that finish so I've had nothing to use as a reference

Restoration Underbody:

The whole body of this Clio Williams is very well preserved.
No serious rust spots or rust holes were found.
First, all attachments were removed from the underbody.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/JhlpCB.jpg

Only harmless, brown rust spots were found, such as here…

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/aZ9UuR.jpg

… and rusted shielding plates of the exhaust system or rusted screws.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/qzkCDx.jpg

The rear axle was removed.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/aeM0el.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/XsEY0m.jpg

The fuel tank as well.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/RXkC6p.jpg

At the lift points on both threshold, there was most work.
Either the points were deformed by improper lifting of the car, or even injured so far, that the rust could eat the plate.
Nevertheless, the repair was no big deal at these places.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/VpD91O.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/V1H1BN.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/NmQFKE.jpg

After repairing all rusty spots, the bare areas were treated with Brunox.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/7Fg1qo.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/t2moRn.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/lJnma2.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/upuU6c.jpg

Thereafter, these places were primed.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/LLQksL.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/z3Ttld.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/T4juif.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/C6he0p.jpg

All sheet edges / transitions were also cemented after priming.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/ymtPtA.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/Pn2MVb.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/pHhASf.jpg

Next, colored, overcoatable underbody protection was used to simplify the subsequent painting in the body color.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/2mBmC9.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/wFYdCf.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/2a7vme.jpg

Now the entire underbody could be painted in body color.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/UTMgD6.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/McImlE.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/K98VkH.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/9NTVEk.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/lUDcSA.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/hCOYLr.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/uxAcKm.jpg

All steel parts of the underbody were blasted, black powdered or black passivated.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/aJj7wN.jpg

The rear axle was assembled again.
Of course, all wearing parts and screws were replaced.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/MpyOq0.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/ZjAA3g.jpg

The rear axle was mounted again.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/682xSs.jpg

New fittings are a matter of course.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/Wstd7i.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/q0hD6k.jpg

Also in the interior again everything in original condition and sealed with foil.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/jUKaVy.jpg

The fuel tank was cleaned, and the hoses and clamps replaced.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/dX1qgh.jpg

The fuel tank was reinstalled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/923/XPMMz4.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/4hJKjd.jpg

The new handbrake cables were still mounted.
Also the brake lines, some of which had to be repaired. In addition, there were steel brake lines in blue.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/LSb11W.jpg

The rusted shields of the exhaust system were blasted, blue galvanized, and reassembled.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/t9TsZj.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/921/t0Mq52.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/TTzyn4.jpg

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/E4KDou.jpg

The front shield in the center tunnel was actually still available from Renault.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/924/2JJaSt.jpg

Finally, the devil Group A complete exhaust system was mounted.

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/640x480q90/922/vF730Y.jpg

Thanks! :)
I don't know exactly what you mean about the finish of the gearbox bracket. It's a normal OEM part...

I mean the finish of how it looks now, is it a brand new part or did you recondition it?

The bracket on my car is a mess so I want to get it back to OEM finish, the circled part is what I mean

Ah... it's the OEM part, but sandblasted.

Aaahhh I thought it had been painted or something like that, I want that look on all of my parts but past experience tells me it's not a good idea to keep them in bare blasted metal as they don't last very long & look very tatty after a very short time :-k

arno samimi
13-11-2019, 23:52
Yes, the bare aluminum will oxidize again and change the color again.
Painting have disadvantages with such parts but also disadvantages. The paint will flake off during assembly.
Then I prefer to clean the bare aluminum from time to time if necessary.
This clio will not see any rain anyway...

amazing restoration - nice work!
