View Full Version : A handy tip for the Mk1's faded plastics

This may have been covered before; if it has I apologise as I haven't found the thread.

Plastic dye is the way forward, I've used it now on some of #360's faded internal and external plastics (grey and black). It is not a paint, as the name suggests it dyes the plastic, it doesn't scratch for flake off.

An example of where I've used it is the door pockets, they go that nasty white colour. You can see around the switch area what colour it should be:

After applying the dye:

They literally look like new.

It does the same to the black external plastics. I'm going to try the grey on the tailgate trim tomorrow.

Looks great and thanks for the tip.

Where did you buy the dye from and what brand.

Cheers

I opted for the straight 'liquid' dye, Plasticare Trim Dye on eBay at £10.99 a bottle (1 black and 1 Grey). There is a company that supplies spray dye (vinyldye.co.uk). You are limited to Grey and Black in the Plasticare 'liquid' format, but for me its a more controlled application method than the spray. There are far more colour options with the sprays though.

I've used it on the door cards, door pockets, seatbelt plastics (grey bits around the mountings), scuttle panel, bump strips, exterior handles, boot lock, wing mirrors etc etc. It permanently deepens the colour back to new looking and you can use still your usual plastic 'dressing' products to give the blacks a sheen after detailing. Its saved me a fortune in new parts; a lot of the parts I've used it on aren't even available new any more.

The item I was most nervous about trying it on is the tailgate trim. I'm there with the best application technique (I use foam makeup sponges), I just need the balls to try it on one of the rarest bits of a 1!

Oh and its useful to note that this stuff is permanent, instantly. It soaks in quickly and once its on its on! That's great for longevity...not so great if you are a messy with it!

p.s defiantly wear gloves as its a t**t to get off skin!

Is the phase one Tailgate trim no longer available from rpd???

Crossers
01-03-2015, 14:09
I tried a stealer and they said no. RPD only lists the phase 2/3 one. All car parts fast can't source one either. I may be wrong however, it seams to vary from dealer to dealer!

You got a link for the stuff? I can only find it in black on ebay

Yes, but you've got to be really careful not to heat the plastic too much or it distorts, or touch it when its hot. If you touch it, you damage the texturing.

Some parts respond well, other parts not at all. This is the best I could get my scuttle panel.

As you can see, not a great result.

It did work well on my 225's plastics though. I think the Williams plastics were just too far gone.

Wow, nice one Paul, can't wait to get stuck in. Which colour did you use on the door card pockets?
Also, as mentioned, can't see the grey on fleabay unless I'm being redicolous.

Heat gun, smooth peanut butter, black wow all good stuff but short term fixes, dying and paint etc will last longer if prepped properly

Has anyone tried this trick of using a heat gun?

Take a look at this video on YouTube:

Looks interesting Gaz, not sure that I would be brave enough to try that though. We need to get someone on the forum to ty it out and make a video, hands up to nominate Gaz....\\:D/ (Sorry, closest image that I could find).

It is a well known method for bringing black trim back to life

Also, I've ordered dyes from fleabay but would still like to know which colour you used where?

The grey appears to be back in stock now.

I used the straight grey on the door pockets. The tailgate strip I mixed the black and grey to match the colour that was behind the 'renault' & 'clio' badges.

These are the pre pics, I'd rubbed it down with scotch pad at this point, that kind of restored some of the colour on its own. This strip was very light grey before that. The handle didn't respond to the scotch pad as well.

These are the post pics. The lighting isn't the best as the pics were taken at night, but the results are good.

The boot strip has been a slow process, building up very light coats of the dye. It will need two weeks to fully cure and take hold. I'm pleased with the results though.

That looks fantastic in fairness and a huge saving on new items, would you have a link to the eBay product please, is this being done on the w1 with one owner from London you bought last year? How is it coming along?

Crossers
06-03-2015, 20:47
Yep that's the one, #360 is slowly being brought back to its former glory! Its had a blow over for now and I'm just breathing life back into as many original parts as I can.

This stuff is a godsend really, available parts for the Williams are reducing day by day.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plasticare-Trim-Dye-BLACK-Plastic-Rubber-Bumper-Paint/261800375520?

As I've already said, use really light coats of the dye, otherwise excess leaves a layer like paint.
