View Full Version : The astronomical costs of wheel refurb?

I'm coming to the grim realisation that the wheels on my Williams 2 need a refurb.... So, just spoke to Pristine and they quoted to the tune of £390 for all 4 wheels, leaving the car there with them. I'm based in London, and don't really have time to take the car anywhere myself and pick it up, so the cost goes up if they come and get the wheels from me of course.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that will come and get the wheels off you and do a good job? Or anywhere very close to London where I can take the car and leave it?

Many thanks!

http://www.lepsons.com/... don't know on what quality of work is like.. I have a lotus specialist down my road and all their wheels get collected by these guys.. mine need doing too.. just getting ideas and quotes myself.. they are in Gillingham.. not much different in price.. I got a quote from pristine and they wanted £64 a wheel.. this was earlier in the year tho..

I enquired and this was my response:

Many thanks for your enquiry received via our website, please be advised that the following quote is approximate and subject to sighting the wheels:
4 x up to 18” single piece, alloy wheel refurbishment in our standard paint with diamond cut with tyres is approx £340.00 + VAT. If you need a specific colour gold, then we would require a paint code, then we can order the paint for you and let you know how much it would cost.
Please note that special colour codes, chrome finish, diamond cut and split rims will incur additional charges (please refer to price list attached). Any welds or straightening required during the process will incur an additional £12.00 + VAT per wheel.
For customers having all four wheels refurbished at the same time, we are currently offering the use of our car storage facility on a complimentary basis and this should be pre-booked with our office. Please note that we are conveniently situated within a 2 minute walk of Gillingham Train Station which links directly to London Victoria and London Bridge Stations. We also have a courtesy car available for hire at £50.00 + VAT.
To take advantage of our complimentary courier service, please print and complete the attached form and ensure you enclose this with your wheels inside the individual wheel packaging. Wheels must be packed securely with no metal showing (if you are sending wheels without tyres, please ensure you package them in boxes – these boxes will be used to return your refurbished wheels to you). Once you have the wheels ready to go, please call our office on the number below to arrange the courier. In general our courier will collect from you on a Tuesday, but we can deliver back to you on any week day that is convenient for you.

If you are considering purchasing new tyres for your refurbished wheels, please give Lepsons Tyres a call on 01634 852237 and they will be happy to give you competitive prices on a selection of tyres. You can then leave it to us to ensure your new tyres are ordered, fitted and balanced to your newly refurbished wheels.
The refurbishment process takes approximately 3-4 working days. Please advise if you wish to go ahead with your wheel refurbishment and the dates that are convenient for you in order for us to arrange this as quickly as possible.

Thanks Vandella. Yes, I got more or less the same quote from Pristine: £390 inc VAT, for wheels on car with tyres.

Has anyone had any experience with The Wheel Specialists in St Albans, Watford? Guys sounds very nice, but hasn't done any Williams. I had to send him photos of the wheels and he's looking up the paints... Does anyone have the colour code or other way of identifying the colour of the wheels?!

I know this might be of no use to you, but I had my wheels refurbished at S.E.M in Sunderland. They done a great job band it only cost me £288

I haven't had Williams wheels done there but they did the rims on my M5 and did a brilliant job - they are pretty much recognised as one of the few places that will actually get the shadow chrome paint colour right on that car. Also the finish is still like new 4 years on - admittedly I take good care of them, removing and polishing and waxing the insides at least once a year and have only done about 6k in that time but I have had other wheels start to lift the paint after that amount of time so I think it points to them having done a good prep job and using high quality paints.

People say it's slightly more orange, but either my wheels were painted before, or it's come out well. So long as your guy knows to polish the lip, use him. They're bound to look better and hold air. I had to do mine because I was so fed up of pumping the tyres up.

My bodyshop fellow had never done Williams wheels before but I printed out the above guide and he very kindly didn't think I was a patronising sod:

Thanks for that. Have emailed the paint code to them; just awaiting a response now. Yes, I've got the same problem having to pump up the tyres every bloomin time!! :D

Well, John at The Wheel Specialist in St Albans, Watford, has quoted me £430 for the lot, which includes the cost of them getting the paint in. So it's booked in for tomorrow, and they'll turn it round in a couple of days. I guess that's the car's Christmas present sorted :)

On a slightly different matter, since I'm a bit of a n00b with car maintenance, my Williams has the following little patch of paint missing on the front wing:

It's just the top layer that I think was pulled away by some tape. Does this require primer before sanding and spraying, or could one just sand the area down and spray? Was looking at the kit here, but wasn't sure if I need the one with primer too..

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but first-timer here and what to get it right!!! :D

Here we are; the car's back from St Alban's, and I think they've done a great job!! The colour before from a previous wheel refurb was apparently slightly off; TWS reassured me that this was the original colour. They're a bit darker now, and more like the Williams gold of the F1 team. Pics below, and a link to The Wheel Specialist facebook page, where they've just posted pics of my car and a couple of others they did at the same time :D

Let me know what you think!!
