Good luck with the restoration, I am starting mine shortly.
BTW Resto Shack's domain has expired, I took a quick look to see what they did - but clearly couldnt.

Just looked at rhe FaceBook site, looks like a real quality outfit. I'm sure that your Williams will be top notch after those boys have finished with it. Would be interesting to see some before and after images.
Do you have any images of the areas that they Re going to be working on?

Looks like you have done plenty of preparation yourself, Have they been able to give you a final price for the work?
Also I'm interested to know what your outer sills look like, since you have posted an image of the corrosion on the inner sills was the corrosion also showing outside? The reason I ask, is that my sills look great, but I'm wondering id I also need to do an inspection from the inside of the car. Are you also rebuilding the suspension etc?

PhilW

I'm due to start stripping mine down shortly. Should have it in the garage next weekend, will then start a systematic dismantling of it and like you say, I'm sure that I will fine corrosion where I didnt expect it.
A little project for the winter, thats not what the Mrs called it when I bought it, she got a little emotional and called it a rust bucket money pit, she may be right, we will see.
Best of luck with yours, those boys certainly know what they are doing with metal work.

Just a general question !!!
When my mate restores/rebuilds his Mk.I & MkII Escort projects,BEFORE he welds any new/replacement panels..he sends the bare shell away for acid dipping, generally the shells come back, looking like a piece of lace:shock::shock: .....but completely rust free.....and it identifies the scope of repair needed and it is easier to weld...Just a thought as these Iconic cars are now 20 plus years old

Sorry to heat that you are feeling like this, unfortunately it's always the way that things get worse when you start dismantling older cars. I hope that you keep going, by the look of what tne guys ar Resto Shack are doing, when they have finished you will have avery solid shell.
I'm sure that I'm going to have some "twitchy bum" moments when the parts start coming off my car.
looking forward to more progress image when you get them.

Hey Kat Bloke, good to see the new images, they are making good progress.
just got my car in the garage at home now, ready for a winter strip down and rebuild.
Had the car steam cleaned this morning so that I can work on a clean underside, undortunately I thought that the sills were 100% and I have spotted a small area of corrosion, so it looks like I will need outer sills along with the off side wheel arch after all - bummer.

Loads more photos to upload when my fibre optic is done on monday, theyve finished the passenger side from a pillar through to arch, incl front floor, jacking point and sill. Just the rear chassis leg to go before it goes to storage for a fortnight then i can pay up to stage one works

Hi KatBloke,

I seen your comments on DW regarding the build, nice to see a thread here with pics, please keep posting as many as you can, I am finding them very useful and informative ! I have recently bought a Dimma 16v, one of the original ones 31 of 50 I believe which will require a serious amount of work. I seen the pictures on st-performance and have no illusions about what lurks beneath the kit, in fact it will be interesting to see if there is any of the outer skin left ! The pictures you are posting gives me some idea of how it should be restored properly so please keep posting. I have seen pictures from a few other projects which have made me grimace a little to say the least !

Best of luck with it !

Best regards, Peter.

Hi Katbloke,
Can I ask, did you provide the repair panels or did Resto Shack?
I ask as I'm going to need to get some of those and the quality of the panels looks good.
Rather then repair some sections, it may be better to just replace as your guys have done. If you can let me know where they came from I would be grateful, cheers Phil

Thanks for the comments gents :) Phil I supplied a good used rear courtesy of mat brown and have since purchased standard outer rear arch, sill, inner front arch and bumper reinforcing panel all patches made up on site by restoshack. I have an inner rear arch panel and n/s inner wing on order.

So far having paid last night I've spent £1708 don't tell the wife :)

Assume the rear chassis legs box sections and towing eye were "bought in" repair panels - I'm going to need these.
As for the work from Resto Shack, its second to none:)

Thanks for coming back to me on this.
I'm amazed that the front jacking points have been made in house they look incredible, Resto Shack are clearly even better than I thought. Although my car is pretty solid, the more I look around the more I realise I need to do....although I dont need to tell you this eh, Cheers Phil

I was wishing that I had got someone to do the subframe for me last weekend. I removed the engine, gearbox and subframe. One of the rear subframe captive nuts snapped and I spent 2 hours trying to remove the nut - I was not having much fun.
Gaz Two got me through it with some on line digital support/piss taking :-D

Hi Graham

Coming along now - What else is left to sort??

You need to ask your man to cut in the elongated slots into each panel under the headlight (seen here to the left with a plastic gromet around) to run the brake pad warning light wire that i can see are missing from your pictures.

Next batch moving onto the offside now.
Front subframe is off to be powder coated, rear beam has to be dropped to treat some areas around its mounting points.

So thats what theyve found so far, mild compared to the nearside, to be expected i suppose. Evidence of yet more shoddy bodyshop bodges uncovered.

One day she'll be back on the road, if she fails the MOT on corrosion
I'll shoot myself i think.

Good to see that you re opthe final leg of the bodyshop work Graham.
its interesting to see that you car needed more work on the nearside, mine is the other way around. The nearside is pretty good with the offside needing the work.
I will as promised be posting some images, I would just like to get the body repairs underway so that I can see the start of the homeward journey. Currently the car is not looking much like a car, its a basic body shell on axle stands!

Holy shit Graham.
I saw the image you posted last week and saw that the team had cut the lower part of the sill off and assumed that the rest must be OK. Then Boom.....the next image, the whole inner and outer sill section is out.
The Resto Shack boys are certainly doing a very through job there, really good to see.
looks like you have a lot of rebuilding work to do when you get the car back :-), that shell is going to be very strong!
Did you take the dash out?
Just part way through my dash removal at the moment, work stopped play this week!

katbloke

Thanks for the tip, I bought a Haynes manual for the car and they also point this out.
Its too easy to miss a hidden mounting point and then break something getting it out eh.
Imagine the squeaks from the dash if you broke a mount point

Funny, I have been thinking exactly the same.
Most of the costs of refurbishment are in the body repairs. Saying that you would probably have to do a course in welding, engineering then lets not forget paint spraying, the list goes on!

Got the dash out today, absolute git of a job, no problem with the riveted bracket, it took ages figuring out that there was a hidden peg fixing with a wedge to firm it up right in the middle of the top of the dash. Haynes didnt see fit to detail this fixing.......anyway all out now. Scary amount of wiring on show........I hate wiring......

katbloke
19-01-2015, 10:29
The subframe was blasted and just a sealer put on it as it needed some welding but that's now done and it's getting powder coated to a near primer colour as possible

It may need to be a tad lighter but your correct the original finish has the primer look about it.

If you have the time to do it then its a good idea to take the engine and gearbox out at this point.
Its not so much detailing the engine but you have access to those areas you never see such as the chassis legs which can be prone to rust on these cars.

As Fab says Graham, of you have the time/space I would drop the engine and gearbox out. You are not that far off it now in any case, theres not much left of the car right now. The cambelt and aux belts would be a real git with the engine in the car, with it out, everything is accessable. It would also be a good idea to renew things like the heater hoses at the bck of the engine and I would recommend the heater matrix if you have not done so already.
The heater matrix takes minutes to change with the heater out of the car (and costs £11) it would be real bummer if it started leaking once you had built the car back up - If you have already done this, I apologise for being a smart arse :winkey:

Man alive that's some wedge you're spending!

My exact thoughts also. Think I'd be scared to even wash it, never mind drive it after handing that sort of money over. However this sets the standard for me, and just go's to show what a quality bodywork refurb could cost to any current and future Williams owners. OK maybe not all are as bad as this, some are worse!, but its worth remembering imo

katbloke
25-01-2015, 23:00
I'm hoping by opening up all areas of the car that new owners might have new areas to look at for rust mine is the only shell I'd buy as I know what's been done if I was to sell I would sell for good money for tg ed same reason and I also hav es the evidence to prove it. Am up to 500 plus photos on my account from the resto company

fab
26-01-2015, 09:47
It's only the people who have actually gone down the route of restoring/preserving who truly understand the magnitude of the work involved in achieving this standard.

Thats why when I see those sheds being advertised for stupid money I know that unless a truly commited person buys it they will end up back on the market for sale or to be broken.

Any monkey can bolt on parts to make up a car but to renovate/restore one of these it takes a person with true passion, skill and determination for the Williams.

Graham I'm interested to know what your plans are for the rear beam.

Let me know what you decide to do re the Bias valve Graham, mine is pretty shonky and I cannot find any details anywhere on how to rebuild them. Would be interested to know if the same unit is used on other cars, but I have not come up with anything so far.

fab
26-01-2015, 12:09
Regarding rear beams there isnt a lot you can do about them other than to clean them down and paint them. Ive seen mentioned in the past that they were originally not painted. That may be true of some of them but I've seen a number of original untouched Williams rear beams painted in a dark blue mat colour. Not black.

The bias valve is a great unknown.
I did manage to take the flapper off gently and have a look at the seals inside. Lube it up and hope for the best.
There was a manaufacturer in France making these up,but I would have to dig deeper to see if they are still about.

PhilW
26-01-2015, 12:40
Did the bias work after your "maintenance"Fab?
I still need to have a closer look at mine, but it seems pretty stiff, probably a new spring would help.

Regarding the rear axle, I was planning on renewing the trailing arm bushes as I have bought some replacements, but I am not convinced that the bushes are the correct size despite it being confirmed by the supplier. If I'm not sure I wont be ripping the old ones out, it will just be a clean down and paint ;-)

fab
26-01-2015, 21:03
The traditional method of testing the bias valve was to preload the spring to around about where the flapper was sitting at 90 degrees to the underbody. Gun it down the road and if the rear wheels locked up before the fronts then there was too much preload on the valve.
The valve I had was stiff to move as you say and commonly we would just pack it with grease, wiggle the flap and it would free up.
But being curious as I am about mechanical things, I removed the flap to figure out its inner workings. You will see a rubber washer.Remove this and you will find the valve. This I imagine is what can seize up. All the valve does is drop up or down to restrict or release fluid to the calipers. Its very like the main one in the front.
So I took the valve out, removed any surface rust on it and greased it up good with some silicon grease.

Essentially it is a very simple device that should not need replacing but certainly requires some lube.Preload the flapper to around about where it is slightly compressed and it should be good to go.

If you really want to check if it works or not, jack the car up at the back which will in turn drop the rear beam.
Then press the valve inwards towards the car (you will have to remove the bar that attaches the valve to the beam to do this) and try turning a rear wheel. It should seem like the handbrake is slightly on. It could be vice versa but I reckon you get the idea.

PhilW
26-01-2015, 22:56
Thanks for the explanation Fab,that will help me.
Bias valve has been added to the long list of "things to do"

Yes.
Just retested it to make sure.
You will need someone or something to hold the brake pedal down when ye test by the method I descibed above.

Obviously to truly confirm its operation would be to run it through an MOT or other brake testing centre afterwards.

I'll shutup now Graham and let you get on with it:lol:

Depends what look your going for.

If you want the "barn find" look then your gonna have to put the top one on.
If your going for show then its obvious. Although I am getting worried about how far your thinking of going with cleaning that block:shock:.
Me personally I like the natural look off an old car.clean and tidy is my moto.
So if it was me I would throw a bit of grease, brake fluid and dirt on that cleaned subframe8-) tidy up the engine as best you can without painting parts and the jobs a good one.

But I hold my breath till the next update..

Yea, you need to get the gearbox off first, but thats a nice easy "One man job"
You can actually mount an engine onto a stand without a hoist, I was struggling to get the engine mounted properly and then found this youtube clip with a guy in USA showing how he mounts a cast iron block V8 onto a stand, with no hoist, on his own.

Wow I remember commenting on a thread about this car on a welding forum! You've way over took me now in regards to progress lol. I need to get myself some more tools and start doing mine again. I have 2 to restore now, although the new one I've bought will only be a mild restoration. Those guys are really good at what they do, about the only person I'd trust other than myself. P.s the photo of the naples front inner wing a few pages back is mine lol :p nice to see them getting the attention they deserve. I must start a thread up for my xeros :)

katbloke
29-03-2015, 18:01
Haha yes after seeing yours on mig-welding i had to order those inner rear arches, i need to get out in the garage and get the clutch and flywheel off and mount engine to the stand, ive been so slack the stand hasnt been out of the box yet

Robinson16v
30-03-2015, 10:30
Haha! They're good stamps those. Iirc they need a bit of modification to match valver/williams. Might not be a problem but I noticed they're slightly different. I've not touched mine since last year :(

PhilW
02-04-2015, 07:03
Out of interest Graham, are they painting it in Cellullose or 2k?
I've not cheked into it yet, but assumed that the car was painted in cellulose when new, do you know?

katbloke

Don't know tbh thought Base coats were water based and 2k lacquer not sure

Try something with leverage on it so long as you have the correct torx on them. I used a torx key inside a 10mm socket and a good wrench/bar. They are pretty tough iirc just stubborn to undo.
Can you take a pic of the crank locking hole on the front of the block to show these lads where it is?

Ha didn't think I had this account still :)

I've got a 3 ft bar you could use if that's enough leverage ;). Failing that get an impact driver on it and plenty of WD.

Oh and get that wire brush out ;)

how far are you going with the engine clean up then?

katbloke
07-04-2015, 12:50
Nothing too mechanical. Water pump camber and it's pulleys maybe cam followers as they were a bit rattly rest will be cleaned painted re fitted and replaced if damaged need to reign in the budget a bit as my original budget for bodywork has doubled

katbloke
14-04-2015, 18:57
Some of todays work done by own fair hands as Ive been allowed to go and do some stuff under their watchful, so ive spent most of today in the engine bay prepping all but the bulk head for paint.

So it involved wire wheel crusty areas on the chassis rails and other areas untouched by welding, the 120 pads on a DA followed by 320 grit then a scotchpad then a blow off ready for masking and painting.

Big thanks to Dave for honesty as hes spotted a small ding in the roof that looks recent as in whilst in their hands so hes painting that for free.
Both doors off too so they can be prepped filled etc etc.
All in all ive enjoyed today and learnt some processes for preperation.
Cheers.
G.

I think you need to redrill the front wheel arch trim clip holes Graham - then paint the car. would be a killer to have to drill into fresh paint and loose all the protection it gives.

Take the front wheel arch liners with you to double check.

They're a direct fit matey, it's the inner rears that are lightly different, but when you buy them from carz2 they only send you the face of it so it's pretty easy to make it fit, I bent mine back a little bit ;-)
