:D Hi all after some advice, looked at my first williams tonight and wow what a car! But i do need some advice here are the questions and my observations of the car:
1 - RUST ! there is some rust on both wheel arches ,some around the filler cap and a bit on passenger door doesnt seem to bad though.
2- Is there meant to be a plaque with the number on it if so where?(its a willy 2).
3 - 84k with FSH mainly specilist in swindon (mike allan? )
4 - Loads spent recently new brakes, back box tyres etc
5 - Gauge on far right is this oil level ? if so should i be concerned it was only just above min. (its due a service how much from a specilist and is there one local to yeovil, somerset anyone can recommend?).
6 - Oil pressure what should it be reading when driving, tickover?
7 - Interior is mint but passenger window not working plus light behind left hand gauge not working, either of these a big job?
8 - Power steering seems a bit noisy and it feels heavy ish on the road also the clutch is quite heavy but the bite is low is this normal?
9 - Wheels have been refurbed and look good and there is a good clifford cat1 fitted.
10 - Seems to drive and handle really well goes like stink!!
11 - 2 lady owners!
Finally they are asking 3K for it seems reasonable but hoping i might get it for 2.75k.
Sorry for all the questions but i want to make sure i get it right as the only other car near to me has had 9 owners which is a bit worrying. Thanks for any help/advice given and hopefuly this will be the start of a long and fruitfull relationship!! Cheers Dave B. :D

sounds ok mate ...whats ur budget u could prob get a minter for 3.5k.rust is normal on most of them as long as its not 2 bad...sounds like its just a few things that need doing nothing major.just make sure u budget say another few hundred to get all the work done.....make sure cambelt has been done and history is all correct .steering is noisy usually and clutches are v heavy....best to look at a few more mate imo unless u really got ur heart set on it....i spent a year looking for mine til i found one that was perfect..

On the oil gauges above the radio/centre console the left one (nearest passenger) is oil level. The centre one is oil temperature, and the one nearest driver is oil pressure. With the oil temp fully warmed (80deg usually on mine but can go over 100) the pressure at idle drops to just above 0. Driving it should go up to around 3 bar ish at 70mph in 5th.

The power steering on mine is a bit noisy its nothing to worry about. It is heavy yes, and the clutch is very heavy, but still comfortable. I actually find it better than the very light clutches in other cars.

See ya

Matt

1. To fix the rust your looking at about 500quid, thats shot blast back, respray/blend for a good job. You won't find many williams that havn't either already been sprayed or are in need of it.

2. Only "Williams" come with a plaque, not a "Williams 2" or "Williams 3"

3. 84k is good low milage. Specialist is often better than Renault monkeys anyway so I wouldn't worry.

4. Sounds good, the usual perishables. Should have had a cambelt recently aswell... they need to be done every 5yrs or 76k.

5. Centre console from LEFT to RIGHT: Oil Level, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure.

Oil level guage will drop to zero after a few seconds of engine on. This is because you can't obviously measure the oil when its squirting around.

What kind of service? 6k minor service should be cheap, an hours labour (normally 40quid, or 75quid from reno) + parts, oil, plugs, filter, maybe a few other items. Shouldn't cost more than 100quid.

6. Really depends on the oil thats in there and engine temp. Mines idles are 3bar when warm, slightly higher on idle when cold. You should see it move up/down with revs. Cruising at 70mph in 5th you should see 3/4bar.

7. Common problem. Either electrical fault on the switch or the motor is knackered, these getting sluggish over time then stop working. Easy to fix, just get parts from scrappy from another clio.

So long as the bulb is in the top half of the console (i.e. the black plastic bit) then its easy, 5 torx screws and it pulls out, then you can access it all.

8. Noisy power steering is just the way it is im affraid! specially when parking you will notice it, on full lock etc. Should be fine.

Clutch are heavy on these clio's, apparently because of the way the clutch cable is routed. Could also be a sign that the clutch is on the way out, in which case it will start snapping clutch cables every 6 months or so. Wouldn't worry about that though. clutches are v heavy on these anyway.

Bite low, yup... the peddle has a ratchet to take up slack on the cable as the clutch wears out anyway, so the biting point doesn't move.

11. Very good then

3k would be a bargain ! Go for it ! :D

:D Hi all spoke to the garage that have been servicing the car for the last 5 years and the owner and mechanic who worked on the car reckon its one of the best they have worked on and they both would highly recommend it!! The previous lady owner always spent the money on it when it was needed no skimping!!The mechanic actually owns a willy and he was gushing over this one!! So decisions decisions!! Only needs basic service £80 or so. I will let you all know how i got on!! Zollo has offered me his but hasnt let me know much details about it anyone seen it?any good ? :)

Check the wheels!! If they look at all orangy or don't have the silver diamond cut rim round the edge it's 200 quid off for a refurb. Should look like this...

:( Is it thursday yet? god how slow is this week!! Anyway couple questions 1, Ordinary unleaded or super(optimax etc)?
2, How easy is the passenger door trim to get off?Do i need torx bits?
Cheers for the positive comments oh yeah and is there going to be another meet at Haynes motor mueseom soon would like to meet and talk williams!!Is there anyone on here local to me (yeovil) as i havent seen a williams for ages!! :D

Jan

There is no real need to use optimax but i think most people on here always do (me for one) 8)

It really depends on how you drive your car.... if you never rev over 4k then there's no point, but if you drive your car hard then the higher octane petrol protects your engine much better from burning the valves seats and other mechanical stuff...

anyway, looking forward to a report tomorrow... ENJOY!

so u picked it up yet mate? lets have some pics posted.

RE the door trim... do you mean the rubber trim on the door, around the window etc? then if so no you don;t need any torx bits i think...

If you mean the door card, then yeah you will need torx bits, best to buy a set, T15 is most common for the interior, but best to have up to T50.

well all i know is willy 2's dont have a plaque mate :D glad to be of service ;)

That i didnt know....why dont they have a plaque?

Because the Williams was built as a limited edition homologation model.

Then Renault built some more, because it was so popular and they realised they could make some more money, but they named them 2 (and then 3) and didn't put the plaque on them, to keep the original Williams owners happy (ish).

:D Well got it!!seemed to take ages to get to thursday but now the wait is over!!Impressed is what ive got to say !! Goes really well but the handling is superb nothing seems to shake it! very very pleased so far only a couple of minor probs-my insurance cert hasnt turned up yet so no tax so it hasnt moved this weekend . Seem to get weird tickover sometimes, most of the time ok (850-900) but other times 1200-1300 it needs a service so hopefully that will sort it or is this a common prob? The other thing is a squeaky pulley (i think) also need to investigate passenger elecie window.sorry no pics yet but the weather has been shit and i cant drive it anywhere sensible for a good photo(bloody insurance company!)I want to put a panal filter in which is the best (power gains, noise, price etc)Thanks for all the positive comments :D Dave B
