Hi guys, now im back from two weeks relaxing in the sun I plan to start doing a couple of bits to the Willy 2. First on the list is to check the cambelt condition to see if its safe to start the car. Ive been told if I remove the drivers side wheel and arch liner I'll be able to get access to the belt and see its condition. Has anybody done it this way and if so got any tips or hints of anything I need to look out for?

Cheers, Chris

just the condition of it really.. possible frayed edges, and rubber teeth worn on the inside of the belt.. any cracks and condition of the rubber

Yeah thats the plan and if it looks ok then Ill start it which also means I can then drive it to a local garage who can do the belt change.

There are a few more covers to remove before you can see it. It will be behind the alternator belt.

Im not sure how much you will be able to see of it though

You will need a long bar to turn the engine over - and remove the plugs before you start to turn should help

Is that so the belt rotates round? To be honest if I can remove the cover and see part of the belt Ill just take a punt on what I can see. If the section looks good ill chance it on that basis.

as paddy says, best way (provided the stupid torx bolts don't round) is to get a jack under the sump (use bit of wood to spread load...ahem) and remove the top engine mount and pully cover. see loads of the belt then
