Thanks to a small trench of a pothole I've got a cracked front spring. Lovely!

I've done some searching and here's what I've found out:

172 front springs are equivalent to standard Williams springs and should fit, are marked white/white, and are either 112 or 125 lb/in (different sources).

172 Cup front springs should also fit the Williams, are marked white/yellow, and are 143 lb/in. They lower a standard 172 by 3 or 10mm.

172 owners seem to rate Eibach Sportline springs but they lower a 172 25-30mm and you buy them as a set of four (front and rear, rear not needed for Williams) for £160-ish. I don't want lowering springs (i.e. -30mm to -50mm) but I don't mind a hard ride... fnarr fnarr!

I don't particularly want to pay Renault £100-ish per spring so instead I could get 172 Cup front springs 8200257954 for £42 each from Euro Car Parts on eBay here:

I'm thinking a spring doesn't have to be a dealer only part and Sachs are a good OEM? That sound about right?

I've just bought some 172 springs for my W3 along with new standard shockers so shall report back when I get them fitted.

Thanks - yeah please let me know how you get on!

I'm going to take a spring of faith that 172 Cup springs will fit. What could possibly go wrong, right!

I'll report back as well... maybe with two large novelty paperweights to sell!

I was told the 172 cup springs will lower the car 5mm, the 172 springs are the same as the williams

Yes - 172 cup springs (or whatever I ordered from the bay) fit!

Height: if anything, more like +5mm but that was after a broken spring one side and probably a very tired spring the other with the top of both wheels previously just into the bottom of the outer arch. Happy to see it wasn't "slammed" to be honest!

Feel: (bearing in mind this is on shock absorbers that were described by my mechanic as "weak but not leaking") - good! Doesn't crash down like it used to over all the horrible speed bumps around here. Accelerating from standstill feels more controlled - but that's probably to do with it not being broken on one side.

Didn't get chance to try it on a fast road because held up by traffic but generally as firm as I'd want it (still what I'd call stiff) but less crashy.

If anyone's interested, I'll reply again after I do the normal A road journey to work.

Mine has standard 172 springs along with new dampers and its made a world of difference and is a lot cheaper

Yes, all good on the new springs!

Much less crashy and no clunking over broken surfaces / drain covers / WWI style trenches on the roads around here. Feels more chuckable into tight street corners too.

Recommended!
