View Full Version : Three bolts on my wagon

One of the bolts holding one of the front wheels on has sheared off, obviously overtightened. The technician at the main tyre place here has told me that this is not dangerous unless driving at 150MPH all the time.

Any comments is this just bollocks or are three OK??

I think Reno may have put 4 on for a reason. I wouldnt risk it.

 indeed.

Will be out of balance so get it sorted I'd say.

Cheched the badges BTW and they look pretty good. I'll try and remember to take them off the strip this evening and get them sorted for posting.

Happens to me so many times that I keep a spare wheel bolt in the glove compartment. It drives OK with 1 missing wheel bolt, but I did not push the car anywhere near limits. Paid about 10 pounds per bolt.

PurpleSun, thanks for the reply, however the bolt appears to have sheared off, is it possible to drill out?? / did yours just loosen and fall out

Just done this on my car last weekend. Didn't overtighten though as I was using a torque wrench.

As someone said above Renault put 4 bolts on for a reason..

Only way is to remove disc, snapped bolt will be in hub. Should be able to get some mole grips on it and turn it out easy enough. Only takes 10mins mate. wheel off, 2 bolts for caliper, 2 for caliper carrier, 2 screws for disc easy.

Can be done without removing brake disc, we lost one of Daz's on his 3 and we managed to tap it out using a hammer and screwdriver/punch.

Yeh can be done with punch.

I had just done discs and pads so bolts come out easy.

Alternativly use a screw extractor and just drill into the broken stud then remove it using the suitable sized extractor...

Don't need to use a extractor. Its easier with a punch or with whip the disc off and use a pair of mole grips. Saves drilling a hole etc.

In all of my cases, they were broken off by tyre shop mechanics who were ill equipped to remove the stuck bit. They were tapped out very carefully - if the surface was uneven enough to begin with. Else you might need use something to rough up the surface first. Screw-loosening fluid might also come in handy.
