Hi, whats the best method of doing the belt? In situ or remove the engine? I cant remember if there is room down the side of the engine and cant check as the car is at a lock up atm.

Thanks

It's easier of course with the engine removed but it can still be done in situ. It's just a bit tight down there!

hardest bit is getting the old rusty bolts out without snapping or chewing the heads up

its a pain doing it in situ, proper wiggly to get the new belt on/bend back the plastic backing to get the idler in etc. but it can be done :)

I used to do it in situ, but now remove the engine and do the clutch and water pump as well.

I never did it in situ, always took engine out and did the lot.

Resurrecting the thread to ask the correct timing belt tension.. haynes states that midway the cam sprockets 100N of force should deflect around 3mm...but on dialogys it states the same numbers though at midway between aux sprocket and tensioner...How do you do it guys?

Guys how do you do it when changing belt at last? Just with the 90 degrees rule of thumb?

Tbh I've only ever done it by feel then listened to it running & if it whines I just slacken it off a bit
