How I converted my valver , 1.2 manual rack too use an electric column
copy and pasted from my c16v project thread

Right onto my next project which was too fit an electric column as I found the manual rack too hard on track at speed with sticky tyres cornering forces are very high and I was fuked after a few laps at full pelt yes I know I'm a massive pussy but I do think I'd hav been quicker with a bit of assistance
I got the idea from a guy at the same track day who was in a mk2 escort with a zetec I noticed a knob on the dash marked steering and he told me he'd fitted a corsa electric rack with a eBay controller to adjust the assistance
A check on eBay later and I found a controller for a clio mk2 column so I ordered that and went too fetch a mk2 1.2 16v electric column ecu and bottom section with the uj's from the breakers

Next I removed my manual column and offered up the new 1
It's fukin massive and it didn't help the fact my hydraulic clutch master cylinder is down there 2 so I unbolted that so it would hang down removed the motor and offered it up again
I probably could of got the 2 rear bolts in as it was , the 2 at the front was miles away and I would have ended up with the driving position of a double decker bus as the angle was completely wrong
So out came the grinder and I removed most of the bracket on one side that would of fouled my hydro clutch and chopped the other side and welded it back on lower down to alter the angle

The column as it comes

Now it would fit in the hole at roughly the right angle I decided too use the steel plate that fits above the valver column too be my new bracket so I tacked it on And bolted a piece of plate too the front 2 holes

Offered it back up too get the height right as I wanted the column too be slightly lower And welded a piece in

Double checked I was happy with it then used more plate too strengthen it all up and a lick of paint

And finally fitted With the motor quite a lot of the dash took a hit too get it in

Next job was the bottom section which was too short luckily the mk2 bottom section is opposite too a valver one ie the splined sections are top and bottom so I chopped the end off a valver rack and got the length right

Then slid it in and welded it up

Then it was onto the wiring which is pretty simple you get instructions with the controller

I had a bit of a panic when I didn't think my valver steering wheel would fit but then realised the mk2 one isn't splined all the way round, grinder soon took care of that

Valver ignition barrel is different too I've got it in but there different lengths so steering lock doesn't work
and the barrels loose , and had too alter the stalks too get them too fit there secured with a cable tie at the mo so might get mk2 stalks and barrel be a bit neater then

Works really well tho and having the adjustment is cool
