I'm in the process of replacing my rear beam so currently stripping the old one of the brakes etc but I'm having trouble removing the handbrake cable from one caliper. I knocked one through with a punch which was pretty straight forward but the other one seems seized to the caliper and the more i bash it the more it deforms so dont really want to use this approach any more!

Has anyone got any tips for this as i don't think heat will do the trick due to rubber being nearby and I have tried wd40?

Common problem mate. Are you changing the cables? If so cut them off near the caliper lever as close as possible and then knock out with a punch. Failing that, remove the caliper and drill it out.

I was hoping to keep the handbrake cable as its not going to be easy to remove the exhaust to remove the cable. I was thinking of cutting a groove into the caliper housing which should allow me to tap the cable out and retain its strength but what do people think, will this cause issues?

so it is the actual outer part of the cable thats stuck - not the inner part as you have that groove in the arm of the caliper anyway

Yeah its the outer part of the cable that seems to be welded to the hole in the caliper. Here's a crude cross section paint pic with the arrow on the part i'm trying to knock through:

I think i'll just keep using force and then see how it goes, ideally i'd just cut the cable and replace it but I spent hours getting my exhaust sealed and hanging right so don't want to take it off again unless its a last resort. I'll try and get some pics this evening if possible.

Here a pic I found on the valver forum showing the issue, mine isnt quite as smashed as this one though:

Just bring on the whole cable!

I got swapped my cables while the exhaust was still on the car!!

I took off 1 bolt holding on the heat shield and removed the cables.

Just had the car jacked up off the ground also.

(best thing I did to the car was fit 172/megane f7r calipers to my williams)

Nice picture is that.

Pull the nipple down into the sleeve and try hitting the head of the nipple rather than the actual sleeve.

Unless yours is real low i have always been able to do cables / change calipers without taking a exhaust off.
