This is the 1st meaningful post & progress with the car due to working my ass off over christmas & not even having a chance to look at the bloody thing since Rod dropped it off 8)

Stud conversion fitted to the front of the car along with suspension & subframe from FAE - most horrible job I've ever had to do on a Clio because of how little room there is in my garage

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/2013/2013-01-03142147.jpg

But the whole point of this exercise was to get the car rolling & able to be moved out of the garage so the real work can begin

Good job. At least the donor car is nearby! Do you have light/power in the garage? It's tough working on cars in the winter, although it has been milder this year so far than most of the others I can remember working on the car and freezing my face off!

No power unfortunately so got to make do, just makes it a bit more of a challenge 8-)

Been sorting through all the bits that came with the car today, so took a few more pics :P

Think it needs some lows at the back

What's the fab number for the car???

Nice update mate :)

It is good to actually see you do something other than post pics of bits of your engines at Dan's hahaha!!

Is that a hydraulic handbrake?

Did they remove the torsion bars then? Why is the rear so high? I guess no exhaust system is fitted right? If you are using the old high comp engine from Cliolord you should get a decent bore size exhaust tbh.

Get some of the stickers back on as Northy says ;)

I quite fancy putting my own plate on the car and yes it's a hydraulic handbrake. As for the height I'm assuming it's like that to allow for extra suspension travel/room, the front arches have been cut to allow more room for bigger wheels it was a rally car afterall

The stickers were removed long before I bought the car but will look into getting some but the car needs paint 1st so stickers are rock bottom on my list of priorities. Now it's rolling & I can actually work on it now, my 1st jobs are to get it gutted so the engine bay can be painted and the interior sorted out. Followed by engine fitting along with the widetrack & freshly powdercoated subframe. After that it's the fun job of wiring & getting it running

Looks good with your wheels on it Paddy, with the wiring,I do not think you should have a problem with the ignition side.
Remeber there is no key.sequence is battery master ON - ignition flick switch ON - fuel pump ON - Hit the starter button and voila shes running.

16v_paddy
06-01-2013, 02:07
I was more on about the wiring for the engine & my ecu

I'm not a fan of the wheels tbh but I'm only bothered about how cheap & light they are, need to source another suitable pair so I can have the tyres I want, set of full slicks, proper wet slicks & road legal R888's as intermediate/road tyres :-p

Text me your address & I'll pop it in the post mate :winkey: The wiring, christ where do I start? Gonna use some of it to combine with the custom loom I've got in the old car, I fcuking hate wiring so I'm not looking forward to that job :-(

Those wings aren't any good to me, they've been chopped up to make room for more suspension travel, bigger wheels etc for rally use so gonna use the ones off the old car. I'll try & remember to take a pic of the vin for you when I'm working on it tomorrow/today :winkey:

Nothing special but picked up a few bits from the powder coaters today.

Took a bit of a gamble with this as I had no idea if it would lok good or crap but for the sake of a tenner why the hell not? Turned out much better than I expected & I'm quite happy with it

About time we had a update paddy - but I'm not a fan of the mk2 dash!!!!

Admittedly it's a compromise but I only wanted a top dash & the mk1 top would look an absolute mess & make mounting the clocks a ballache, this looks much neater & will allow me to fit all the switches, gauges, heater controls etc I need whilst getting rid of the bottom part of the dash and looking neat & tidy

If you need anything just give us a bell
Rodders

Come work my shifts for me  as it's now time that's holding me back from getting it done

Still not decided yet tbh

northy
18-02-2013, 22:59
Why are u not using the full mk1 dash? Surely the saving isn't that much by the time you've made your custom brackets to stick the bits to the mk2 top???

northy
18-02-2013, 23:00
Are u getting it dipped before painting?

16v_paddy
19-02-2013, 00:21
The full mk1 dash weighs shitloads & looks messy when there's no carpets or other interior bits in there hence the decision to go with just the top, then I saw the mk2 dash top & saw how it'd be much better for what I want to do so I've committed to that.

Are u getting it dipped before painting?

Not going that far, too much money & hassle and not worth it on this car, I'll try & remember to take some pics underneath as it's uber clean & solid as it is, just wants some good old fashioned underseal and elbow grease.

The main aim with this car is not mintyness, just everything neat, clean & tidy with all un-neccessary stuff in the bin

northy
19-02-2013, 09:40
so whats your plan - fast road / track or keep it rally prepaired?

16v_paddy
19-02-2013, 20:55
All out track car but with whatever's needed to be road legal so I can drive it there as I can't afford to do the trailer & licence thing just yet

Hi Paddy,
I had no idea about the beam,:shock:It was already on the car when it came from Ireland,as I never got it running,it was something I never checked. If I had a spare you could have it,but I sold it just after you bought the car.

It is just amazing and embarrassing for me :-k:shock: what sandblasting uncovers.I was told it was a Sparco cage, with regards to the welding,I was never impressed by any of the Irish owners work to be honest, but I pointed that out on the initial survey you had.Must admit your putting me to shame,I kept it for 5 years and did not do half of what you have achieved in 5 months =D>=D>

Watch this space later today - tomorrow.:winkey::winkey:
I am picking up the "old" sub frame/wide track assembly with the Grp "A" copy engine / gearbox mounts from my rally car,I have put a brand new one with competition bushes etc etc.
If is of interest you can have first dibs on it .....with discount :grin:,for the rear beam problems.
Can you advise how to get pictures on here, the size that the ones of the car are.

Hi Paddy as promised albeit a few days late.
A complete wide track Williams sub-frame,seam welded and strengthened, with the ultimate gearbox mounting ..no more dog bone worries...a direct copy of my Rally car Alloy Grp "A" mounts, then the front mounts all sourced from the Renault parts bin.....Does away completely with the standard engine gearbox mounts and the battery tray..Believe me the engine / gearbox does not move :winkey:[-(

Can someone tell me how to load bigger pictures please
Rod

Make yourself a photobucket account ( it's free) and load your pics to it as jpegs.

Then select a photo to post on here (see pic below) and click the IMG code tab, then paste it into your post.

http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr139/ianbirch/Photobucket_zps913070dd.jpg (http://s477.photobucket.com/user/ianbirch/media/Photobucket_zps913070dd.jpg.html)

It should then be loaded into your post, like the one above.

Cheers Ian:)

I have the part numbers for the "rubber mountings which bolt to the subframe ,if you go to your Renault dealers ,Im sure he will show you ALL the other bits and pieces,I think its a Renault 5Gt Turbo mount.
Here are the numbers 77 00 801 543 & 77 00 785 949.

Me & Matt have already got those mounts 8) the 1 on the gearbox side is standard on a mk2 & R19 and the rubber mount for the other side is from an R5 GTX iirc, only £7 from a local factors. I'll have to have a nosey at that rear mount when I pop up :winkey:

Paddy.
The rear one is fabricated around the R19 gearbox mounting and fitted with a Williams bottom arm bush, and then slots in the two uprights welded on top of the rear sub frame...It will only have clearance for a manual rack, but could be made to clear a power rack by just milling/cutting some clearance away.I have a icture of what is required somewhere

Only update I can give is the chav badboy-ing on the bonnet has been chopped out, proper vent & rain catcher has been fitted, 1 aerocatch fitted and a windscreen so it's finally water tight

A couple of days of ballache tidying up the spaghetti mess that was in internal wiring loom to be able to fit the dash properly, has resulted in a rather annoying fail  wires for the stalks on the steering column don't reach

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/2013/2014-02-07162111_zpsc9286bec.jpg

and another harsh lesson learned, valver/williams dash bottoms aren't the same as boggo spec items :( as per my previous comment, am I fcuk as like removing the dash after all the trimming & what not so will have to figure something out to make it look pretty later

After re-drilling the mounting holes and some fine tweaking with a hand file they're now a perfect match

This kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-5-GT-Turbo-Vibra-Technics-Full-Race-Kit-/370926478090?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item565cf0e30a It's all R5 GTT stuff and you need the brackets to match

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/2012/Dialogys%20pics/R5Mounts_zps6c51a7bd.png

The front gearbox mount doesn't fit the hole for the R19/172 mount that's already in the subframe so you just need to drill a new one

Thanks Paddy... :-)

Expensive mounts - but no doubt worth it on a race car!
Another purchase to add to the ever expanding list!

Got any pics showing them fitted?

couldnt you have done something with the grill to make a scoop up and in - just seams a shame to destroy the filters with spray from the car in front when it rains!

16v_paddy
13-06-2014, 19:20
Filters are disposable/service items  besides a scoop would be a waste of time as it wouldn't have made any difference, it'd be getting the exact same kind of airflow to the trumpets as before which is nowhere near enough.
At the higher rpm's - where it was feeling pretty slow/strangled for power - it needs to be getting the exact same airflow to every single edge of the trumpets. It made 237 on the dyno with the bonnet off but no way was is making that much on track, a big hole cutting out was always on the cards after bedford & now there's the added bonus of being able to fit even bigger trumpets :excited:

Transfer reshell, it's all the same thing  Brand new bare shell from the factory with everything salvageable from the smashed 1 put into it.

Not traced the original owner as such but I know his name & it was his post with the 2 pics above that Gaz found on some french rally forum from 2009. I was under the impression that Rod got it from the original owner as it was his name on a load of the paperwork I got with it :???:

I've still got that engine ..in bits, ported head and big valves with Columbi Bariani Cams...new block, crank, rods, pistons ..strange though it is,there were no vernier pulleys.I bet in total it aint done 2000miles
Its at Fletcher Racing services :tongue3: waiting for me,to get built and flog it off maybe :-k,As the years roll by for me ?????Im not sure what to do,my own engine has done b**ger all.
The beam is a proper Gp.A affair with studs to retain the shocks etc.
The story of the shell :- Mark Carson was parts manager at the Belfast Renault main agents, when the "Works" Renault rally team did the British Championship, they based at Marks garage.Alain Oreille & Robbie Head,Mark was the third points scoring member for the Renault team, however a few weeks before the Circuit of Ireland,Mark totalled the car,and it needed reselling. He contacted Tim Jackson and explained the situation....a Brand new Standard shell was then supplied.....Hence the not so clever welding in areas, where Marks shell prepping people did the shell, that's the state of it now...a million times nicer than it was =D> and a credit to Paddy. Also al the "good" bits :lol: ended up on mine.
I sold Flan the discs and calipers, seats and other stuff to guys on the Forum

Aup Rodders! Howz it going?

Dunno if you've seen it but I blew the bloody thing up at Castle Combe  Totalled the cylinder head & cams  but the block is fine, so new head & even lairier cams along with the custom exhaust will have it back in action pretty soon :gears:

Well it's about time I updated this & gave a brief snapshot of what happened

Was an epic day at Combe, the changes made since Bedford have completely transformed the car, it was genuinely fast & I'm happy as a pig in s**t with it http://www.cliosport.net/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/_JEN0459_zpssqoxkiza.jpg
Things didn't quite go according to plan though
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/paddock_zpsjzoaifan.jpg

Exhaust cam decided to seize up whilst going flat out around Folly - circa 100mph
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/paddock%203_zpsoixcf7s3.jpg
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/****ed%20cam_zps4qkjxw0z.jpg
The cam locked up and the force of the engine still spinning ripped the pulley right off then bending a load of valves

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/pulley****_zps8wilzvbv.jpg
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/head%20fubar_zpse129t4cb.jpg
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/bent_zpsyp0c2itr.jpg
Plus a bit of backfiring through the cylinders with bent inlet valves

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/wall%20trophy_zpsiyfeze5b.jpg

Net result is a scrap cylinder head and a destroyed cam and pulley, fortunately the shape of the high comp pistons saved the day as the valves hit them perfectly square over the whole face of the valves so they didn't dig in & break off :-D

A short while after the disaster the car was booked in for a full custom exhaust to be made & as the guy doing it had a 6-8 week waiting list to get in we went ahead with it anyway.

Unfortunately after that lot I ended up buying an Accord Type R which then cost me a fortune in bits & bobs so the Valver has been on hold since then.
But I managed to source another head, with matching cam carriers from a friend which has prompted digging the car out of the dirty garage for a bit of a scrub up

And now is where we really get down to business with the new parts, solid lifters, uprated valve springs & retainers and a set of Piper 300 cams
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/16v_paddy/Race%20car%20build/cams_zpsv1tv1npa.jpg

The head is currently at an engineering place in Warrington having all the necessary bits & bobs done to rebuild it sorted out & checked thoroughly. Next step when the head is ready is to make room in the workshop, get the car in & the engine removed so we can take it to the engineering place & see if the pistons need to be machined because of the mega lairy cams then reassemble the bastard thing

Long overdue update 0131 has been kicked out of the workshop to make room for the little jobs that need to be done to get this finished

http://williamsclio.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=8228&stc=1

Jobs to do are:
remove engine to fit new flywheel & baffled sump
rewiring to run wasted spark
finish fabrication of mountings for the new seats
add harness bars to the cage
finish fitting flocked dash
then fire it up & get it mapped

Already booked the 1st outing at Bedford Autodrome on the 27th March :driving:

Took it to Donington Park yesterday to give it a thorough testing & so far so good, just a couple of issues with a couple of fixings here & there but the engine & diff are performing very well so next off is a trip back up to EFI Parts for more mapping as we weren't able to get the full potential out of the engine because of clutch slipping, goemetry being miles out and 2 year old fuel

That looks fantastic. I hope you haven't encountered any speed humps with it!

Taking steps to make it road legal now but not as simple as you might think as the bonnet fixings prevent standard lights from fitting so gone for some Morettes

how did you get on with them front wings - the fitment looks a bit off towards the bumper

The fit of the standard panels was equally as bad to be fair  Plus a lot of the bumper has been chopped/worn away to accommodate the suspension setup, the wings are blank with only rough guides of where to drill the holes for the bolts so they will only fit as good as the person fitting them
