Hi, not been on here for a ages and have a problem thats been bugging me for a while!!

I have a Williams 2 with a problem! On tickover it sits at 1500 rpm for the majority of the time and redlines at between 3600 & 4000 rpm? Do any of you have any ideas what this could be?

Another problem which could be related/unrelated is that when it gets warm it seems to lose a lot of power on acceleration and sounds like its suffocating itself. Possibly down to a K&N that the previous owner had fitted? Might try going back to a standard air box.

I really hope someone can shed a bit of light on this please as im rapidly falling out of love with this car after so much time and effort restoring it.

Thanks

Tim

Does your speedometer work ok? Does it wobble?

The early redline has been cured by replacing the rev counter mechanisum

Some people have had high idle speeds when the speedo is knackered. That wouldn't explain the low rev limiter though.

Get a rev counter mechanisum off Matbrown and that should fix your early rev limit!

Or check the cat isn't collapsed and blocking the exhaust.

Thanks guys' Matt, what's the rev counter mechanism, where does it go and do you have one. It sounded like the cat was rattling, I replaced it with a de cat pipe and the rattle is still there but could be a heat shield underneath. Could the lack of power/breathing when hot be related to the low rev limit? At a loss here. Appreciate all of your feedback, thank you.

Rev counter mechanism is just part of the dials.
Would prefer to sell the clocks complete.

Ok mate, how much for a set of dials delivered?

Cheers

You can just swap out the rev counter mechanisum - easy to do.

Blown ECU?

Collapsed Catalytic converter/blocked exhaust?

Clocks ordered from Mat so let's see what difference that makes. Wobba, it does feel like the exhaust could be blocked but only when it's done 2-3 miles and warmed up?!odd!

Well, let us know how it goes. Lots of little things it could be but should just be a case of trial an error...

Right, I can't even do the simplest of jobs without asking for help, sorry guys but how the hell do I pull the speedo cable off the back of the dials, it's pretty tight back there!!

I hope that's all it is mate

Think you squeeze it. However it's something I've not done for a long time

Yes, you squeeze it a little and pull :)

It is tight but not that hard.

Mat, thanks for the dials, ive swapped the motor and it fixed it temporarily, it was revving just past 6k and ticking over really nicely and now its stopping at 5k. Arghhhhhh......
