1/ IMO
2/ When you say taking the car to the limiter? What that? Obviously the limit but limit of what?

IMO....means in my opinion

Taking the car to the limiter means the preset rev limiter, that stops you blowing the engine up

Some of us have never found the limiter! :D

was always worryd about takin mine 2 the limiter (b4 i did it 4 the 1st time) just in case i blew my engine up! lol

these days though it acidently happens on a daily basis

LOL I used to take my mums 1.2 Clio to the limiter, 30mph in 1st lol, 58mph in 2nd, 75mph in 3rd, 90mph in 4th, 100mph (down a hill) in 5th lol.

Mine hits the limiter at least once every journey, usually 2nd gear as that's 30-60 limit lol. Quite fun hitting the limiter in 3rd while on the sliproad of motorways aswell, its fun overtaking cars in the fast lane on the slip road.

See ya

couple more for you AFAIK= as far as i know

IIRC= if i remember correctly

Doesnt hitting the limiter induce crank shaft sheer forces?

are valvers meant to beep at 5 - 5 1/2k revs telling you to change gear?? cos mine does and its a bit annoyin

can this be stickied so its easier to find meanings of what willy-jr has asked???

no it reduces them....thats its point!

Surely having the engine violently shake at 6.4k revs or more repeatedly is not good for it?

Was reading about crank whip from rev limiter abuse. Its a limit not a target

one of the most sensible things i read on this forum since joining.
Forum rocks! and i hate sensible but thats a good quote

well i suppose it depends how hard the cut is

the basic shear force that the crank experiences are both tensile (during exhst stroke) and compression (during combustion)....+ve and -ve.
at high rpm, the shear forces in bothe direction for want of a better term cancel..i.e the tensile due to reciprocating mass exerting force on crank during exhst stroke when there is no resistence (cos exht valve is open), "balances" some of the compression force caused by combustion. hoeved if the combustion is cut, then there is an increse in tensile shear. so ur right on that bit. BUT the actual magnitude will depend on how harsh the combustion is quenched. also the actual magnitude i dont know without doing the maths.....its half past midnight, i ant be arsed! suffice to say the force exerted on the crank due to combustion is far far greater than that due to recip mass

dunno wot this shaking is ur on about!

and yes its a limit, not a target

Heh, I like it when stan (and BenR) explain stuff. Clears out the sinsuses in my head. Both these 2 guys must know enough engineering to fix the space shuttle :)

Top fellas. 8)

I can fix the space shuttle. Foam sheets and a staple gun :P
