I don't have the pic, but basically with column off the car, hold one end, twist the other end and where theres give/its flexing, weld there

Is it difficult to remove the column? or can it be welded in situ? my steering rack is going to coming off the car so seems its a good time to get mine done

it can be done in situ, but its not a walk in the park, have to ensure carpet etc doesn't end up on fire etc ;) lol!

Is the welding done from the bay or inside the car?

How much is a new column? I think if I had to remove it would sooner just stick a new one in whilst I am on.

Good guide, thanks Ian.

its done inside the car, feck all of the column is on the other side of the bulkhead really :)

a new column is a couple of hundred last time i inquired.. much easier to take the column out and have it done..unless time is an issue, then in situ would have to suffice but it'd be hard to get a good solid job out of it i could imagine

easy to get a decent weld, hard not to set fire to the carpets or melt plastics etc, lol!

how did you protect the dash/carpets Jamie?

You can pull the carpet far back enough. Plenty of room. I've done a fair few and never had a problem.

IMO it is a barbarism to weld it in situ, no more than 30 mins to take out and put back the coloumn.

If you do it in situ even so, don't forget to disconnect the battery.

might only take 30 mins if you have done before, I will have to have a closer look!
