here are some photos of the work started on the willy, i brought this on ebay a couple of weeks ago, i was just up the road from me, i wasnt looking for a clio i was just looking for a retro car to do up and came across this, it had a day left and i couldn't get hold of the bloke to view it but a car dealer friend new the car and where it was , he had sold it from fish brothers reno 10 years ago and his brother had owned it once so he knew where it was i went to see it and it was ok, i couldnt hear it running but was assured it ran well, it has tons of main dealer history so i went for it.
body is really straight never been in a knock and all original panels sill and wheel arch on os is rotten, ns is mint. it drove really well felt tight and gearbox is smooth, i found evidence of new gearbox fitted by main dealer at 76k its on 98k now and all the mots and history adds up.
the only thing that didnt work was the rev counter but thats sorted now.
So first job the ROT, im using a aftermarket sill and wheel arch repair panel, i priced up a new quarter panel and sill from reno but the only one that was avilble was a complete side at nearly £1000
after cutting off the sill the inner lip and floor lip was shot so that has to be made.
Im going to be repainting everything apart from under the bonnet, the more i look at the running gear and subframe makes me want to replace it all but i haven't a open cheque book on this car, so i would love to see what others have done to tidy up underneath

Can you tell me where you got the wheel arch repair panel from please?

Looking good. I also have a N reg Williams 3 on nearly the same mileage. I just have the offside rear arch that needs sorting and like you, I am aiming to have a full respray too.

I also saw this on ebay and had my eye on it lol :-)

The rust isnt that bad, i got the wheel arch panel from auto panels weston but its for a standard clio i will have to make it fit but i should be fine .... Watch this space....... i bet most clios out there have this sort of rust my sill looked ok its not til u cut it off u can see how far its spead, its all the bongo (underseal) on the sills hiding it and holding it togeather

done a bit more work last week end we realised that the after market standard sill was a bit longer than the original so it had to be cut and shortened and the edge and the lip modified i also had to buy another wheel arch panel, it had to be cut because it was to long and also needed another end piece for the inner. only the inner left to do now, Ive had a good look inside the other arch and sill on the inside now Ive stripped out the interior, the wheel arch is mint inside but the sill has a git of grot not to bad, i will disk off the the out side to see what its like before i decide whether to put another sill on i found one small hole on the floor that's its rest of the car is good, i want this car to last for years and it will be totally rust free, heres a few more pics i very pleased with it so far i normally hate using aftermarket panels on jobs but i have no choice

The panel fit issue isn't solely because of being aftermarket parts, it's because they're panels from the lower spec mk1's :winkey:

Got to agree with the others, great work in saving it from the scrap yard in the sky. Keep the pics coming.

I believe mine is almost done, hoping to get it back next week from its fairly extensive bodywork and painting.
Although, as most people know, I ain't doing the work myself so cheating a bit.
Just need to get my mate to install new head unit and alarm and fettle central locking.

One question for anybody, does anybody have a pic showing the position of the Kick plate decals that say "Williams"
They're ready to go back on but Pete the painter was wondering in which exact position they need to go?

PhilW
03-10-2016, 19:17
Where is the kick plate?
Is it the same as rear 1/4 panel?

Replying to myself here, I went to look for the measurements that I took when I removed the side stickers, at the moment for the life of me I cant find them. I do have them somewhere, so if nobody else comes up with a response I will post up when I locate.

Love the work.
Quick question about the sill, from the pictures your fabricator has ran a standard sill. Has that been taken all the way to the rear or has he modified for the wider rear arch. On mine I've modified to fit the wider arch.

Black waxoyl covers everything stops rust progressing and look great
Dinitrol for the sill its lighter and can be injected between the inner and outer sills
