View Full Version : What basic Tools are needed to change the front brakes

Evening all,

realy basic stuff this :) Just need to know if there is any special tools needed to change the front disks and pads on my williams? Its got the lucas calipers if that makes a difference. Will be changing them on the weekend and dont want it to be another job i start then realise half way through i need a trip to halfords for special tools :roll:

Any help much apreciated, cheers

No, it's a doddle really - standard socket set will set you right, with maybe a C spanner to hold the nut on the guide pin bolt to stop one end turning whilst you loosen/tighten it. You'll need a Torx bit to remove the retaining bolt on the discs themselves. If you already have a set you'll likely have the correct one. I posted up pictures, the sizes of each bolt, Torx head and correct tightening torques in the Guides section some time ago - I think the subject was 'Torque Settings' or something like that, if you do a search.

Thanks stevie_b i thought i would ask before attempting it. Some of the cars ive had in the past have needed specialist tools for the brakes so i didnt want to be messing around as the williams gets used daily 8)

The two main bolts, which sit behind the caliper and hold it onto the stub axle, can be bloody tight and there's limited access, but they've never beaten me.

Also, I've twice had to drill out the securing torx screws from the discs. People put them in so tight, you dont need too have them super tight. Probably garages and theit stupid 'air gun everything' attitude.

I just turn the wheel to access the carrier bolts, loads of room then with decent stubby socket and breaker bar :-)

Yes, these can be a problem Will. Sometimes whacking them with a hammer flat on their face can loosen them up enough that you can remove them without ruining the head and having to drill them. They are only supposed to be tightened to quite a low torque (I put the exact figure in the tightening torque post I think) to hold the disc in place whilst you work on the car as ultimately it is the wheel bolts that do the main job of retaining the disc onto the hub once the wheels are back on.
