as above, shiply are very useful to find a cheap service

if the car hasnt got tax mot or insurance it can't have any wheels on the tarmac, must be fully off the road

technically yes, but i would of thought if you get stopped they wont be too keen on you going miles and miles on a rope for example, straight bar would be better bet

on straight bar i'd go for it, but to be perfectly honest i don't know the ins and outs of the legalities of it in terms of distance etc. its possible you should only tow to nearest garage on something like that but again i have no idea

ai we knew that ;-)

its just if your bombing down the a roads at 50 on a straight bar, technically all legit, not sure if distance matters, in theory it shouldn't

Are you talking about using the exemption to needing MOT and tax on a car if you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT test? If you are then it has been proven that there is no limit on the mileage covered - it doesn't need to be your nearest test station or anything. However, I think the wording maybe something along the lines of 'you need MOT and tax... ...except for the purposes of driving the car to/from a pre-booked MOT test or to/from a place of repair'. If that's the case then you could be on dodgy ground trying to use the exemption since you are not 'driving' the car - it is being towed! I suppose one could argue that you still need to drive it when it is on a fixed bar or tow rope, but I'm not a lawyer so don't know how that would be interpreted. I wouldn't risk it - you can hire a trailer for about £30 (assuming you know someone with a licence to tow a trailer and a car with a tow bar).

To tow a car with its wheels on the road it has to be taxed insured and mot'd

There arent any expceptions I am aware of other than recovering it from a failed MOT if the car stopped running during the test.

The "to/from a place of repair" that people mention in the context of an MOT is only relevant if the MOT station is the other end of that journey.

Ie you are allowed to drive from the MOT station to a garage to repair it, but you are NOT allowed to drive it from your house to a garage for repair without an MOT or tax.

Even when going to or from an MOT you need insurance.

There is no mileage limit that is relevant to going for an MOT, you can live in john'o groats and book an MOT at lands end if you want.

Not quite true.

There is no MOT station in Lands' End - closest one is in St Just

Lol.

You can also use whatever roads you want, including motorways.

I looked into it for some work I was doing for a car magazine and the DVLA confirmed to me that there are no limits on distance or roadtypes etc.
