I'm sure most of you who run ITBs are familiar with PAS pump problem. I was wondering if there's a way to keep (mechancal) PAS and fit ITBs. Is there enough meat on the pump that I could just grind off?

At a later date I will probably run electric PAS pump, but I don't want additional problems now, because I'm behind schedule anyway.

PS: I don't want to convert to non-PAS rack, because I don't like the feel of it and I also intend to run bigger wheels, so I'd really like to keep PAS.

Mount the PAS pump on the upper cam belt cover and run it off the cam?

Another method,That I have used and also my mate uses the samemethod also.
Is to use a Citroen Saxo VTR electric pump.
On the rally car it is mounted in the passenger footwell, and plumbed in through the bulkhead .

I was thinking about R19 16V(Clio) electric PAS pump (fitted on cars with AC). I think that would be direct fit on the rack?

There's certainly no way to keep original pump where it is, just slightly modified?

Been looking at the Citroën Saxo pump as well.
Seems like a popular solution.

In regards to your question.
The Jenvey manifold clears the pump no problem.
But you are not using that manifold i guess.

i ran mine with the PAS pump in place. Snowmans car has it, Ronees does, and so does Gaz's and Wobbas

Gaz had to grind the rear of his caseing from memory and so did i with my original F7R manifold, theres quite a lot of meat you can grind off the pump.

Yea don't worry Robi.

Mine uses the 714 Chadil manifold, so there is a weeny bit of modification to fit it with nthe Clio PAS pump. Nothing you can't sort.

I only needed to grind a little off the manifold on mine to clear the pump, depends what ITB's you are running though.

I found some info about electric PAS pump. As I said, it was fitted on LHD R19 16V cars with AC. But from my memory that thing was much smaller. Anyways, here are some pics:

There's a guy here in Slovenia, building R19 1.7T and he used this pump

But I think that "vertical" version is also available for Clio

I think finding one would be the biggest problem. You can buy rebuilt original Renault pumps from a specialist for around 200 pounds in case anyone is interested.

I think that Clio DCi uses a very similar pump (models around 2000 onwards). If anything, it's probably much easier to find.

Good effort.

the mk2's with electric PAS use a non hydraulic system. They have a motor around the column, there is no pump

You have to be careful here, you don't want to ruin the steering feel.

I'd like to fit an electric column from a corsa b/c to mine at some point, easy to make adjustable then.

Steering feel is very important to me, that's why I would prefer original Renault solution. But if feel is not the same, then I would prefer something a bit smaller under my bonnet.

I never really did any in-depth studies on electric PAS pumps and how to control them, but my ultimate goal is to make it potentiometer controlled with an off button. So it could be turned off when additional power is desired (current drawn from the alternator also puts strain on the engine), and "weight" of the steering wheel could be easily adjusted with a potentiometer.

Maybe pump can be dameged if you drive around with it switched off, maybe not, I don't know yet. So if anyone has any experiance with this, please come forward! :)
