Hi.

My Clio. Off the road again. Clutch needs to be replaced, dogbone mount, tyres,... I also have to rebuild my front calipers as they seem to be unbalanced.
Bought new tools(yep, they're the same as Robi's) :)

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/659/p1000330a.jpg
Refurbing calipers...
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3820/p1000329r.jpg
I'm gonna paint upper mount in orange like calipers.
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/2565/p1000331.jpg
Also changed needles...
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7749/p1000332a.jpg
http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/3368/p1000334h.jpg
Most sh**ty tyres ever...
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4307/p1000333j.jpg

New tyres will hopefully be Toyo R1R(read/heard some good feedback for them). I'll also change front shocks(mine are FUBAR'd) for new original Williams stuff later and maybe also original 16V/Williams/172 springs, I'm not really sure about that but it's probably really best thing for our roads. Will my car with original Williams front shocks and springs sit higher than Williams, because of the lighter E7J lump instead F7R? Your opinion, experience?

Cheers

David

Due to less weight, it will sit higher than a normal Williams, yes.

The R1R's won't be troubled whatsoever until you get a lot more power :)

How will you do the clutch? Split box and leave in engine bay or remove it entirely?

dkrevs

I'll lift the whole engine with the box out. I hate working with the engine/box in. Other excuse for me to take the whole unit out is exhaust/downpipe as I can't take the subframe completely out(where downpipe joints with CAT is very rusty and bolts won't undone, I would have to cut them and it would probably blow after that anyway).
Thanks for the advice on suspension, I'll probably stay on my Eibachs. :)

Time for update. As you can see below I didn't get R1R tyres in the end because the price gone up and they didn't have them in stock. T1R's will do for now.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4357/p1000335n.jpg
Also bought new clutch, Valeo item.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/1300/p1000336zc.jpg
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3852/p1000337n.jpg
And new dogbone mount.
http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7686/p1000338j.jpg

Tyres are already on the car as I had to roll it out of the garage to make place for my father's Mazda. That's all for now, I have a lot of work at UNI, so clutch and dogbone will have to wait.

Cheers

I am so loving the orange calipers :D what paint did you use?

I am so loving the orange calipers :D what paint did you use?
First some grey primer(for metal) and then some ordinary orange paint used for various applications(from the same manufacturer as primer-it's not Hammerite). I'm a little afraid that it won't take the temperatures that hard braking cause. We'll see. In real they seem even more bright orange so pictures don't do them justice.

Nice new stuff :)

T1R's will do you fine. For outright performance I don't like them BUT they allow a level of slip which entertains a driver, which is just as if not more important than massive performance.

Thanks! :D Yeah, I think T1R's will do just fine and as you said having fun is most of the time more important than having immense grip with on-off character.
I just had to take a few snaps, so here it is. 8)

One wishbone is lower than the other? Can FUBAR'D shocks be the reason?

Cool stuff DK.

Shagged shocks could be the reason for the way the wishbones are hanging. However, if you have just removed them and put them on there is supposed to be a procedure for fitting them, whereby you keep them at a certain angle as you tighten or something like that. I doubt it makes any difference in the long run though.

Good work. When are you putting a 16v engine in?

Well, that's a question of which even I don't know answer for sure. After so many engine choices and combinations on my mind I really don't know what the future will bring. It's a mix of my finacial state and registration limits in our country. After all I'm still a student and I'm not loaded.
If I'm really honest I didn't had any true joy with my car yet, driving wise. There's always something wrong. Shocks are FUBAR'd and it needs tracking done apart from clutch and dogbone which I'm sorting now plus few other bits. After that I'll hopefully be able to just drive and enjoy it for some time.

Well an engine with complete and ecu cant so much money, i have changed engine in my R5GTE from 1,7 8v to a 1,8 16v ( F7P) i have tested it every year (needed to keep it on the road) and no one noticed that it has a different engine.
if you still want your car to have a engine that still look fairly standard, get a 1,8 8v or a 2,0 8v i dont think anybody will notice on a car that old.

Sorry for late reply.
TBH I think bigger 8V engines wouldn't keep me happy for long time, therefore it's a waste of time for me. Our MOT guys are not so stupid, well maybe there are some but again there are cops who can also have a look under your bonnet if they want to. It would really need to be a stupid cop to overlook gigantic 16V engine. Either way I need to have homologated engine swap, in other words homolagated change of chasis from 1.4 8V to 1.8 16V.

In sweden you can get your cr homologated for more power, if you rebuild it , if you change gearbox, engine and brakes including master cyl, you can get up to 15kw/100kg. and get it road legal.

Well, our country doesn't have such options. You can only homologate engine which was installed by Renault in particural model, let say Clio 91-98. For this you need paper from someone who swaped your engine, registrated workshop or Renault service. But engine must be stock, no ITB's or turbo, it can only be F7P/R(or any other engine which was installed in Clio Mk1 models), no F4R allowed.

Clio drives around for almost a week now! :) Sadly I have no pics as I lent camera to my brother, Robi has some but I don't know when he'll upload them. Clutch is working great now and new dogbone mount is performing as it should. :D The whole car is much better to drive, I had some great fun on the bends with it.
I'm really satisfied as all the work was done by myself and I learned so much in the process. 8)

I bought some new stuff for my Clio. Valver front and rear bumper. :)
They both need respray as they're 449 blue at the moment.
I also started on rear ARB project. It's basically a Peugeot 405 Mi16 front antiroll bar I got for free(thanks to Mandic and Robi). I now need to design the mounts and bushes to attach it to 1.4 rear beam. Pictures later. :P
