when fitting a tailgate are there suppose to be any sealing gaskets were it bolts to the car?

There's a large rubber seal that sits around the edge of the boot (on the car end)

theres usually a red gunky silicon gasket seal type stuff, a good gutter sealant would be fine. mine neve had gaskets. just a gooey crap.

i just wasnt sure,i got my dimma shell sprayed and im starting to but it back together and i want to make sure everything is done right.
