i had this since the times we had heavy snow etc a few months back.
it has gone gradually noisier with time . at first i thought it was either
the water pump or the alternator but running the engine with the
belt removed yesterday i found out it was not either one of them .
so i pulled the cam cover off , all nice and dry in there and i still cant
pin point where the noise is coming from .

both tensioner and idler pulleys were fitted brand new when the head was fitted to the b/e last summer . like mentioned i had this noise for months now
and the engine is still performing perfectly fine and the beast gets driven everyday . anyone else had this before ? possible fubared head ??

You pulled the cam cover off and it was dry?

Supposed to have oil in there bud.

Is it that whistling noise? Very high pitched?

If it's still there without the belt on then it cancels out a lot of stuff

What engine is it? Could be cambelt idler if it's a 714.

Just seen that you had them replaced with new. Can you pinpoint where abouts it's coming from roughly? Is it cam belt related?

Sounds like one of the pulleys, was the belt done too tight?

sorry i meant the cover for the cambelt and pulleys mate , thats how its running in the vid .
yeah its the high pitched noise ,which i cant pinpoint as mentioned :?
its williams head and meggy b/e and yes there is oil in there and
i got 2 bars of pressure running hot .

very high pitch, over tightened belt tends to be lower pitch unless its rediculous tight!

defo coming from that side? gearbox bearing perhaps?

Could be way off here but did you have an idle problem a while back, because that sounds like it could be an air leak from the inlet gasket , small holes give high pitched noises. As I say shaks may be way off and you sorted the idle issue ages ago.

I've got exactly the same issue with my F7R Williams engine but it's not a high pitched noise like that.

Can't really describe the noise, sounds like the bottom end knocking very slightly but the noise comes from the cambelt side of the head

Need to rip it all apart and find out whats going on. It's been like it for a year!

Mat the belt was done months ago and the engine was not making this
noise than . only just started after the heavy cold/snow etc .
cambelts dont tighten themselves iirc .

the idle problem is still there , well i have 2 of them .
1 - it will not go below 2300rpm after a good wellying session .
i fix that by turning the igntion off and on in a milisecond :P
2- occassionaly when its damp (the weather :) ) it will idle up and down
and if i drive away ,it will try not to run under load as soon as i dip the clutch the revs will go up again .

thinking about it sounds like a whistle ,it could be an airleak .
will have a look spray some wd40 to see if the noise will change .

Isn't there a particular pin in the ECU which recieves the signal from the road speed sensor, which keeps the idle under control?

IIRC, when theres a bad earth (and thus i'm guessing no signal or incorrect signal from the road speed sensor), the ECU is either not getting a reading or an incorrect reading.

Might it be worth locating the pin in the ECU plug and running a fresh cable to the road speed sensor, with a fresh earth? Just a suggestion, probably a shit one!

i almost ran 10 different earths all fresh as a daisies as well
have not made fokk all difference . i am currently running a BRAND NEW !!!
speedo cable and nothing changed .
i still suspect the throttle position sensor just could not fit another
one to confirm this .

The more i listen to it the more it sounds like a bearing. I know you said you dis-connected the alternator which means the aux belt is dis-connected also BUT you still have the other 2 pulleys and adjuster on the cam belt iirc. Yep you said they were done but if they were over-tightened they could have been damaged. Slacken off the belt a tad and see if the noise changes. Are you sure they changed that center pulley?? Who did the work?

done the wd40 test today ,sprayed a bit along the way where inlet manilfold
bolts to the head . after 30 secs the noise was gone suddenly .

than i lifted the inlet manifold by hand to hear the idle going up , sounds like
the nuts are loosened over time . also the fact that i never fitted the supporting brackets back on to the inlet manifold does not help .
so anyone that has similar noise ,do those simple checks on the inlet manifold first !!

this might also explain some of my idle troubles .
did not have the time to fix it today but knowing there is nothing
wrong with the engine i can fix that after .

APPY DAYZZZ :D

back on topic

seeing the lovely weather out there today ,i decided to work outside .
here comes to top off & inlet manifold out :P

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c249/evrenfenci/Photo-0090.jpg

luckily there is no damage to the manifold at all , i probably dont drive
"brutal" enough iirc . The problem becomes clear right away .

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c249/evrenfenci/Photo-0086.jpg

and the other half .lol

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c249/evrenfenci/Photo-0087.jpg

nothing mr weld-meister cant fix thankfully .

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c249/evrenfenci/Photo-0093.jpg

obviously this is a temporary solution , i have to figure out how
that bracket snapped like that after 6-7 months of driving

a brand new inlet gasket later she is quiet as a mouse now.

Coops style bonus/ghey pics !! :P
