Interesting...
which clutch to choose - there are several for the 172 on the Helix website depending on the year of the car...?

I'm looking for a cerametallic option for race/rally application.

megane and 172 fly is identical. same part number. Also all 172s and 182s use the same clutch

Thanks Danny.... :)
I guess this means i have quite a selection of clutches to choose from from Helix, Sachs etc.

i found a company tht would do a Greenspeed Carbon Kevlar Kit @ £265.00 inc vat and del, it comes with an uprated pressure plate and a cerametalic carbon kevlar disc with greater heat resistance, this fits the 172 flywheel. the company is called techniclutch and are on ebay.

helix everytime steve fella i run standard valver/williams diameter (200mm) helix 4 paddle and have done for 3 years now with no issues, very very high quality item and absolutely no complaints about it at all, worth every penny

so i'd guess a 215mm fitment helix would be an even better item ;-)

i can;t stand paddle clutches, not for an every day car. how much torque you chucking out of yours?', im currently at 250 so im wondering if the organic one will cope?

Helix state the torque rating for eah item on their website... :)

Helix organic will deal with your car, but if you were to go bigger with the turbo it would struggle

to be honest, i doubt i will go for more power out of it as its fast enough for the road as is, but just need to sort the mapping out. just want a clutch that wont slip under abuse.

Cup racers and lots of comp car just put the paddle plate in and a std Valeo cover so the pedels is just as good as std. Its when you fit an uprated pressure plate like on the rallycar it very heavey and like an on off switch.!!

Helix are very good only issue is they dont put part numbers on their bits as they just use mix and match component so its a nightmare.

Megane and 172 clutches have different part numbers too but told they are the same. Very confusing.

i tried a helix paddle friction plate (same one i have in now) with standard valeo williams coverplate, it felt like a normal clutch but slipped like hell

tbh i dont find my clutch too bad day to day, bit crap in traffic but i tend to let traffic pull off, then idle along in 1st at 5mph :-)

i looked into organics and all sorts, but even the setup i run now is only officially rated to 230lb/ft dynamic torque (altho i spose that means 230lb/ft applied all at once, which never happens)

with the 215mm clutch however its likely the next one down from the paddle will cope with the 260lb/ft odd my engine puts out

that gives you no extra clamping force, so no real improvement in torque handling. They just use it in cup racers becuase a paddle plate wont burn out with the abuse they get on track.

Torque handling improvements come from greater clamping force, and thats what you really need with a boosted engine

oh, and the difference between megane and 172 clutches is the release bearing, which is why they have different part numbers

as above really. i have a helix organic in one of mine. had it fitted over 4 years now, has had loads of abuse and is still going strong. it is the complete clutch plate and pressure plate, slightly heavier than the gtt valeo i have in the other 1 but not the same snappiness, on/off, feel to it. is more like a normal std clutch than the gtt 1 tbh.

I like the on/off nature...i am used to it with my current Sachs clutch. If i do get a 172 fly wheel or similar i am going for a Helix paddle clutch.
Great input guys - thanks... ;-)

im currently using a sachs complete 4 paddle kit and had no trouble at all
i pulled 326Nm torque and its still going strong so i would recom sachs...

Totally agree, for a fast road NA build then a std cover plate is usually more than adequate....a proper uprated clutch is horrible for the road unless you go hydraulic....

For a tubo an uprated cover plate is essential for longegevity.

No thats wrong the release bearing is the same 172/Megane.....been through this at the Helix workshop and with renault.

Cover and drive plate are different numbers.

i have the 4 paddle helix on my turbo car and it was very difficult to drive before i put on the 172 soft pedal conversion, now its as easy as any car and take off can be controlled, not everyones cup of tea but the soft pedal conversion is essential in my opinion if using the car on the road,
