View Full Version : Gearbox Maintenance
hi chaps. have a gearbox here which came out of the willy as it had a minor leak. it's a good working box so would like to sort it out and keep as spare or put it back in.
question is is there a seal or gasket where the arrow is pointed below and is taking the gearbox apart as simple as un-doing all the bolts going around it?

Yeah there will defo be a seal there as the Gbox contains oil! But on taking it apart I'm not to sure- on the Porsche Gboxes at work they simply unbolt and pull apart with the gears on their shafts being attached to one side! I would also watch out for the selector fork!
Gotta take a look also at the mess I made after the speedo cable refused to come out. Hopefully this will be a cheap fix.

OK no gasket/sealant as such just machined to seal.
Currently not sure how to take out this cog below as access to the speedo housing is beneath it. Any ideas?

Was the box easy to seperate like that then?

circlip in the middle there chap ;)
cliokiz was well easy. just the bolts going around it. couple of small what look like seals came out but it's simple to identify where they came from. gotta wiggle the gear selector a little and it came apart.
zmaster2k yep circlip is out but on the other side where the drive shaft goes on there is a black cap. took that off and underneath that is a huge nut that needs one of those deep socket type plugs to undo. Must be a 30+ size.
i got mine out with a big hammer lol just to check out the internals but had no intention of putting it back together so good luck fella without damaging anything..

My current dilemma is finding a tool to undue that mofo of a nut! (shag you said 3 times lol) you hammered it out? that mean the cog aswell?

The big black thing you took off to expose that hug nut on the output shaft is the seal that is leaking on my car at mo. Can you get a pic of it and how did you remove it?

Use a flat blade screwdriver to tease it out, it's just friction fitment.
A new one will just push straight on, but make sure it's seated correctly otherwise it'll just piss oil out as i found out :(

as cliokiz said wobba..just need to tease it out. I belted mine with a hammer :P so need a new cap :lol:
that hug nut? any ideas what size tool or what tool could be used to get that off?
just for reference the nut is 50mm and the depth that it would need to reach is 55mm. I am looking at deep impact sockets but thay dont have the depth.
Mines only started leaking since I hit the lip of the gearbox there trying to get the roll pin out the driveshaft. Maybe I only need to reseat it.

Wobba you could certainly try using some sealant around that cap. it doesnt spin or anything it's just a cover to protect the bearings inside.

for a 50mm box spanner. Haven't tried one but apart from the propper tool its the only thing i can think of.

That will do the job nicely. Anything else I looked at was £100+. thanks..
Wobba there is a rubber o-ring behind that cover that seems to seal the centre of the cap against the drives shaft.
If the leak is coming from the centre of the shaft then it's very possible this o-ring has perished.

AFAIK it's the latest issue of the JB-JC manual. There is an another, but older manual of these gearboxes.
The manual is certainly over-whelming but if I focus on one area at a time then it should be OK.
Picked up one of those box spanners locally today and it fits nicely so just need to get some gloves and get suck in.
Right then that was simple enough. Got the diff out. For now I'm only looking at the clutch housing side of things.
Here is the clutch housing bearing. Notice the plastic holder is broken. Need a small bearing puller for that one.

This pic here is for cliokiz :) Thats the tach control pinion. I need to drill the shaft from above and replace with a new one. It's recommended anyhow when doing maintenance on the box.

Looks a bit daunting for me lol
The four bearings are do-able with a press and pullers.
As for stripping down the gear 's to get at the syncro's well thats a whole different scenario :)

I am not sure i would be able to do a gearbox rebuild.

Are these baerings the same for all JB3 boxes?
And what about JC5 boxes?

The chap over on gtt64 had 265,000KM on the box and one of his bearings started to "sing". He found a repair kit for the JB box he worked on which came in at around 255 yoyo's or roughly 210 sterling from reno. Not bad at all considering their OE parts.
The JB is almost identical to the JC and I would imagine the bearings to be the same. One would just need to get the JC kit from reno, and chances are they supply all the tools necessary to complete the job. Will make some enquiries soon.
I should add that there are in fact 6 bearings in total (missed 2 underneath the 5th gear) :oops:
Would you take on the job for £300 all in? Thats a complete refurb.
So just to close off this post..called reno and the full repair kit which includes everything, bearings,syncro's,springs etc comes in at €454 (retail) £381 UK pounds. Consider 10%-15% discount and it's around €410/£330
The most important tools needed are the bearing puller for the output shaft bearing on the clutch housing BVI. 1165 costs €65/£50 and tool for extracting 5th gear hub BVI. 1170 costing a wopping €112/£100 both available from reno,
and a lot of patience, usually supplied by your DNA!
