In your experience - which tires are best for wet weather track use?

Please divide into two categories:

- Road legal (make/model)

- Race (make/model)

I've never used anything that isn't road legal - I've always stuck to the MSA list 1A or 1B tyres. As long as there is not deep standing water I find that if you can get a bit of heat into them the likes of Toyo R888 and Yoko 32R/48R still work pretty well in the wet. No idea on the ultimate though, and I tend to ease it down a few notches in the wet anyway so can't really be sure how well they are performing!

Eagle F1's are the best all rounders!!!

Michlin PE2's best all rounder.

Keep em coming... :D
Good suggestions there guys.

I've used R888's in the wet.
They do work quite (surprisingly) well when brand new but only to a certain point. When worn just a little bit they tend to loose the ability to drain water. Almost spun at the Ring last year!

Ideally i would like soft road tires which drain water very well.
Dry operating performance is not important.
Winter tires would probably do the trick very well - but are probably way to soft for lots of Ring laps in the wet.

Road legal - I'd recommend Toyo R1R's, mine were fantastic at Anglesey last year, and have been used on the road in sun, rain and even snow?! with no problems, fantastic all round track tyres imo. Good year eagle F1's are also good as a cheaper alternative. Don't have any experience with race tyres though I'm afraid.

The RiR's are very good, but only up to a certain level of surface moisture.

Heard good things about PE2's. I may put these on my spare Speedlines after I get them refurbed.

2nd ed. only ever had these on mine on track.....apart from the yoko 539s that had a tendency to lose grip....only had them on the rears but spun twice with these on...

Hmmm... PE2's - R888SG's...
Might work well... :-)

What about these - supposed to be very good in the wet!

Yes, but go for the Rainsport 2's as they are meant to be better again. Lots of user reviews rate them very well for wet weather ability.

I have been quite impressed with Hankook V12 Evo's recently on my old car, after moving over from Eagle F1's. For the whoe price vs performance debate, the Hankook's impressed me.

Hope that helps. :)

Very helpfull :)

I've seen the Rainsport 2 as well.

Not sure which of the Uniroyals would suit the Clio best.
Tests seem very equal - and the RainExpert is a "new" design.
Both are quite cheap.
Price is not the most important.
I am going to spend way to much money (£1500++) on a 4 day drivers course on Nürburgring and then spending all the time sliding around on/off track....

I need good rain tires - just in case! :D
Last year it was pouring down massively!

Lots of good info and input guys - thanks!

Get some proper wets, Dunlop of Michelin. You will be able to drive in the wet with these than in the dry with road tyres.!

I shit you not.....

I s**t you not.....

Hmm... Tempting...
But at most of the Trackdays here and on Nürburgring they need to be street legal tires. On the RIng due to the fact it is a public road.
On the other hand - who would ever notice.
I might get a set of proper wets and some road rain tires. Just in case....

Thanks! :)

I've never had my tyres checked at the 'Ring. If you have visible tread (which a wet tyre would in abundance) then you would never have any problem with that side of it. If you are involved in a crash on the roundabout at the exit of the car park though, not sure how the German Polizei would see it... Change back to road legal tyres in the car park? The main car park will be almost empty on a wet day so no need to hit the public road to get over to the overflow car park to do it there

True Stevie...

At the drivers training course we will be situated in the F1 paddock with a garage - so no issues in the tire changing department! :D

I'll have to look into it what is allowed. I have been told they are very strict at the training course.
On a normal Touristenfahrer day they won't stop you unless your car is a shed with old tires and too loud! :D

Have you heard anything from SH recently? I hear that they had issues agreeing a contract with the new 'Ring management and are now no longer running their courses?

Unfortunately Steve - big serious issues...
They had a deal with the old management to run a few years into the future regarding prices etc.
New management has cancelled all agreements and raised prices.
Result: Scuderia Hanseat cancelled for 2011 - for the first time in 52 years! This is a disgrace! I am so disappointed!

I can only urge everybody who loves racing, cars and the Ring to join the Facebook group: "Save the Ring"
