View Full Version : A question of heating...

As some of you know, my heating is shit. In fact it doesn't really work at all. However I'm curious to know how everyone else's fares in comparison.

Mine works in the following fashion, it makes warm air, by this i mean, if the engine is hot and is standing then you can feel some warmth from the vents. When it is moving, and particularly during the winter the air that comes through the vents is not noticeably warmer, it functions to keep the windows clear, but nothing more. Nothing to keep the inside toasty.

Further to this, the vent selector works somewhat ineffectively, any selection that involves using the windscreen only will come through the dash vents and vice versa, the only exception is the footwell. Obviously when the dash vents are closed manually this problem is solved.

Come the time I get another car, and Willy gets ripped to bits and sewn back together again I will replace the matrix with the new one I've had since April, but in the mean time, has anyone got anything to say on the subject?

I would add that it does mean I dont have to give people lifts everywhere, which is nice :D

February will see it have a significant service, where amongst other things it will have a coolant flush.

Well, the adjuster system uses little levers and cables I think, they get jammed or something. Probably need something like this:

Also, when you do your coolant flush, replace the thermostat. Get the pipes that go into the heater matrix off and get a hose directly into one pipe at a time. You'll be amused at the brown shit that comes out.

new matrix and a decent coolant system does a good job.

My matrix is now about 2 years old and combined with a rebuilt cooling system (so no brown coolant :P) gets *very* hot.

With it on max heat and on blower setting #2 or above, I can't actually keep my hand next to the vents!

It's only about an hour or two to change the matrix if you follow cliolords guide, and probably about £60 for a new matrix, coolant and stat... well woth the job!

oh, and this magic button helps too :D
