I have only seen one other mk1 Clio with this problem.

Basically, was driving round a corner and thought the car was understeering as the steering went so light. We are talking car jacked up at the front with engine running light  Infact, the PAS is working so hard that is you set the steering to central when stationary and tugg the steering wheel right then let go, it will run around to pretty much full lock on it's own! The pump sounds like it's labouring constantly unless steering is central and central steering play in the rack has occured when engine is off.

the French, they love giving us something to do don't they :D

Is it the same in both directions? and I assume you were not carrying out the test on sheet ice? Yesterday I parked up, handbrake etc. as I got out and locked up a fella said to me 'your car is rolling away mate' it was slowly sliding down a big lump of sheet ice.

Seen this once before on a rover steering wheel can be turned with one finger, turned out to be the rack on that car. The valve block had stuck so not relieving pressure, might be worth checking.

It's your old rack Andy

Yeah, I know it's the rack chaps, just wanted to see how common it was.

Wobba, trust me you don't want your steering to feel like this

It's really weird, caught me completely off guard. Was pretty light when I first got the car on the road but then it just went so light I nearly made a mess on the seat! I have another rack spare anyway so no biggie
