View Full Version : Gripper Differential

Ive been speaking to Tom Seal from D R Engineering about his Gripper limited slip differentials for the Williamsclio gearbox.

His site can be found here - http://www.racecar.co.uk/gripper/

To install the Gripper diff, Tom will need our gearbox, whether it be new, reconditioned or original. He charges £150 for a full strip down, clean and inspection. Parts needed are added on top of this cost.

To fit the diff, the crown wheel needs modification, but this is included in the purchase price of the Gripper.

Ratios and be custom made – but I will be staying with original.

The Gripper assembly is £860.
But to ensure the gearbox is 100% perfect – the extra £150 (above) has to be added.

If we can get 5 people to confirm we can get the Gripper assembly for £720 – but I might be able to improve his figure with a little persuasion.

My gearbox has started to whine ever so slightly – and when it goes completely I am seriously considering this modification.

Is anyone interested in the deal ?

Does the 870 inc Fitting?

northy
03-08-2005, 11:02
nope.

£860 for the kit.

And a extra £150 ontop for the strip, clean and rebuild with a LSD fitted.

This isnt something you can do at home unless you are very good with laser welding.

the sadev box is complete unit and nothing like tho Northy. will these have any guarantee, as i'd like to know they have confidence their product wont explode after some general abuse that these cars get...

i basically mean performance asside what benifit is there for this price, as i'd expect an indestructable box for that price... well, nigh on anyway!

maybe....my 3rd gear is crunching now would he may able to sort this when he strips it down or would I need a new box too?

I asked about a warrenty and he said that they give the usual warrenty and that they treat there customers very well...ive been given some details of a williams in Blackpool running a LSD (which he was kind enough to provide) - I will get intouch asap.

Hes done 12 williams in total so far....forgot to ask how many had come back for rebuilds since.

Nope.

Tom says that they will fully strip and clean the gearbox, (£150) and replace any bits that need changing (at cost) while the box is apart.

The £150 covers the strip and clean + crown wheel welding and LSD fitting.

If anything these box's should be stronger than standard.

exactly, sure no one wants to shell out all that money for it to break 6 months to a year down the line. people like 2 live who give it some stick and people like me that do a lot of miles wont want to be doing this once a year, otherwise it's not worth it... might be a good idea to advise em on how we use our cars?

I did jon.

Fast road use, 4 x trackdays a year and 10 days of 1/4miling covered it.

Jesus

The Gripper LSD on mine was built around 1997 according to receipts etc. The original owner used to race it at hill climb events and the car had 23 class wins, so you can see the kind of abuse the gear box has taken! I can only see in the history one major over haul of the LSD by D R Engineering and that was in 2002, so it had taken 5 years of hard driving.

Personally I wouldn't get one as I don't race my williams and I couldn't justify spending that amount of money, it just so happened to have an LSD already fitted when I bought it. If you're into track racing and 1/4 miling I'd definitely say it's worth it if you have the cash!

lol@ northy

yes i priced a box up from sadev..was £6k....but that included a fully rebuilt s/c c/r dog box with sequential shift, all shifting gear and shift light/gear indicator....oh ...and 6 gears as well as reverse

and price would come down for a group buy of 5 or more..considerably too

or there is another option of a 5 speed helicot gear set with lsd and solid shaft kit at a cheaper 4k..or the lsd n solid shaft kit for 2k

northy
03-08-2005, 15:56

I know Ben used to be able to get the 6 speed Sadev for £4500 and the 5 speed for £2500, not sure if he still gets them, but hopefully he'll post shortly and let us know the crack... i'd be very wary of building up the std box whatever they say they do to it, as it would need a 3 year guarantee as I know i'd kill it in 13 months on a year warrenty...

03-08-2005, 21:55
Thats not cheap. I was seaking to someone with an LSD car and they said its the best modification they had done to there car (and there as a fair list).

I'd be tempted to buy an proper Cup racer for 7k or so though.

I'd love to know how much Renault pay for there sequenchail boxes with LSD's I'm guessing £3k

Lunner
03-08-2005, 21:56
So what exactly does a LSD do?

BenR
03-08-2005, 22:11
in the easiest sense of the word, limits the maximum amount of power applied to the wheel with the least grip.

Open diffs release power to the wheel with the least grip.......thats bad m'kay.

J o n
03-08-2005, 22:14
instead of one wheel biting more on take off and on general accelerations it distributes the power equally to each wheel giving it monumental grip off the line and grip and power out of the bends. deffo a good thing imo... just not sure about one on a std box... i've gone through one already and have killed a gearbox on all of my cars... i have a tendency if i'm gunning it to change gear and slam it in far too fast and hard... got the Willy to spin slightly a couple of times in 3rd with Wayne in the car  hehe

VIPERONE
03-08-2005, 22:18
a waste of cash imo.. i would buy a sequential box with reverse unit. and choose my own insane ratio..
like very short 1-3 4-6 bit longer

J o n
03-08-2005, 22:21
ratios are fine as it is, once you get over a ton you need them closer due to the car having the aerodynamics of a brick. mine lagged to **** with the old box when going from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th wouldn't pull up ANY kind of hill and would only pull slightly on a flat road... was pants in that respect, but it would go well off the clock  keep em like the valvers and get a 6th gear in keeping with the ratios, it would EASILY pull as standard let anone cam'd up n shit and would also make it a better motorway cruiser.

The new 6 speed box as fiitted to the 105hp modus is he one to have realy for normal driving.
Plus it the new RS gearbox. And good for 240NM (176lb) with a warenty.

Mat.

Quite noisey, you can hear a constant grating noise when driving, and at idle in neutral it is very noisey! I thought there may be a problem at first but apparently this is normal!

Northy, do you think you would be able to come down to Runcorn next Thursday, it's only another 15 mins down the M56 from Lymm Services, I know some decent roads I can take you down! I'll PM you directions if you can make it...

Didn't realise he was only based in Cov!
Just spoken to him and got quoted the following prices with no special deals:
Gripper unit - £700
Crownwheel mod - £85
Strip/rebuild - £150

I'm still very tempted by this.
Anyone else?
