Is the starter heatshield there? Could be overheating starter.

Cheers mate, thats what the heatsheild is.

Cant be overheated as it does not start form cold, unless its broken from the heat.

how can I test it to see if it is the starter?

if the starter is turning over it wont be the starter , durrgghh
could easily be an earth point that the garage have not put back on
properly . easiest way to check is to get an old spark plug ,pull one of the
leads from the engine and rest it near one of the lifting eyes or anyother metal part of the engine . turn over the key and look for spark .

ideally , rathe than fokkn about with all that ,undo and clean up all earths from battery to chassis leg and see if it gets reet .

It's possible for the starter solenoid to break down and become weak or fail when hot, then be ok again when cold.

Your ever had to take a hammer to a starter to get it to engage?

Thats probably not your fault btw. Just worth a mention

Sounds like the starter motor is knackered.

Worth checking the connections on the back of the starter motor, especially the spade connector.
