Damn ive had fun not...

My dad drove my other car into a puddle during the bad weather we`ve had lately, damn puddle turned out to be about a foot deep

Anyhow he realised it was getting too deep, and stopped to reverse out, by which stage a learner driver (who had intended following him through the puddle and was right on his bumper) had stalled right up close behind him, he waited while the learner started the car and instead of just reversing out, said learner decided it was a good idea to attempt a 3 point turn instead... this turned into a 100 point turn/10 point stall... by which stage my car had cut out on my dad:cry:

Anyhow dad called me with the bad news and for a tow out, I have to be honest when i arrived at the scene I looked and thought thats not that deep, a flooded dip in the road was very decieving anywayi towed him out, then i popped the bonnet and had a look at the airbox etc ..and was convinced the engine had not injested any water, so after a bit of drying i tried starting the car,

Yippee it started fine, i let it sit for 3 or 4 mins and it ticked over just fine, just as i was putting the towrope away i heard a real scarey crunch/grind and sudden stop of the engine
 I could have cried HYDROLOCK

I knew i shouldnt have pushed my luck and started it
Got it back to the workshop to have a look, by this stage i was praying it had just locked up and needed the cylinders cleared and dried of water because the car was only ticking over when it happened,

NO CHANCE
I found:::::::::
5x bent conrods (and i mean bent lol)
1x piston smashed completely in two (one half of the piston ended up ontop of the other half, so you can guess the condition of the head)
1x mangeled head, the other was ok
1x piston ring completely imbedded flush into the cylinder bore

SCRAP ENGINE ARGH :(

So not to be beat i eventually sourced another engine from a breakers yard, got it back to the workshop, chucked it into the car bla, bla, turned the key, and it turned over, then before it got fuel up, a SNAP/RATTLE BANG and it stopped dead too, (hadnt even got it started)
Anyhow called the breaker (thankfully he gave a 3 mth warrenty with the engine), so i didnt want to strip this engine and scr*w my warrenty...
I explained what happened and he just kept saying i must have had done something to the engine, it was driving perfect in the car it was taked from,
2 or 3 days of calling the breaker and getting no where or having my calls ignored, I decided stuff this, and i just took the engine back up to his yard unexpected, after a bit of bickering i told him to show me what id done to break it and he could keep my 500 quid...
He stripped the engine in front of me to find a valve head snapped cleanly off its stem.. damage included
another smashed piston
Another buggered head
and smashed piston thrown sideways into the cylinder bore

After careful examination we found carbon on the inner of the valve stem, so came to the conclusion the stem must have been cracked/fractured for some time before i bought the engine, after sitting for a while, then my turning it over was just enough to snap it completely off...

I mean whats the chances of that???

and even better he had no more said engines to replace it with...
I got a refund and started to hunt again...

This time i became even fussier with the engine i was buying,
But eventually i found one at the right price, with only 42k miles on it and proof of full service history...
But it was in glasgow, stuff it its a good engine i will go for it..

My lucked changed at this point, engine it all ok...

Another £500 for this newer engine, then £250 ferry fares over and back, then fuel food etc, damn thing ended up.. costing near a Grand!!! but id no choice those engines are hard to find over here
whats worse it was a grand of saving for the williams restoration project

 Oh and did i mention the car was advertised for sale at the time, I was selling it to fund the williams repaint/restoration..

I swear if i didnt have bad luck, id have no luck at all

Mega bad luck dude. Ive seen fair share of hydrolock and valve break damage and its always serious carnage!

yeah me too, but usually Ive found at low revs (ie tick over) damage is little, I mean the engine was well and truly stuffed, to look at it you would swear it was doing 60 or 70 mph at the time lol, i will chuck a few pics up later, its a right old mess :?

Sorted now anyhow, just means the williams restoration is a little further away now

Ah bollocks mate :(

Just get another engine in there and maybe rebuild your old one over time.

yeh surely dad feels a tad guilty about this?

yip he offered to help out as much as he could and it was obvious he felt like sh*t big style, but his £££ situation is alot worse than mine
Needless to say i refused his offer of help...

Just goes to show you though, He is in bad health and yet when i got the final engine back, he never stopped at the car till he had it all up and running again, i had to argue with him to let me help with the work involved..

Money from dad never came into it

Damn awaiting the slagging match now

Now the engine from the breakers yard which split a valve when i tried to start it

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/528/img0088a.jpg (http://img295.imageshack.us/i/img0088a.jpg/)

Only part of the valve head left, found the rest in the exhaust manifold

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/5493/img0089ce.jpg (http://img237.imageshack.us/i/img0089ce.jpg/)

Mashed head minus the valve head where it broke cleanly at the stem

Back out with this engine, back to the breakers yard after a few days of bickering, no replacment so a refund instead

yeah cool lol

My dad was a diesel fitter for 10 years and Dukes transport cheif mechanic for 8 years, not to mention years of workin for himself so he knows what he`s doing when it comes to an engine...

He taught me just about all i know about cars engines etc...
