Theres a clip inside that needs spreading while you knock the cv end off the shaft.

I have to change them too! Any pics of that clips would be greatly appreciated! Would save me a bag of money, that could be better spent on other goodies! 8)

Right, Ive spent the last 2 hours on this and had me step dad looking at it. Given up. This is the g/box side input.

Theres no way whatsoever that this comes off. Personally I think this is pressed on at the factory. This may be backed up by northy telling me you cant buy the cv joint from renault you need to buy the whole shaft. It also says this is the case for some mk1 models in my haynes manual.

Theres no clip, nothing on there.

The bit ive highlighted in red seems the only way to get this cv joint off by having this removed/pressed off, but I presume its welded/pressed on so with such tightness/force this will not remove by hand means.

The bit Ive highlighted in blue, is from the mk1 haynes book that says to lever this retainer clip up which then allows the outer cv joint to release. But theres nothing to lever this aginst, its solid all the way to the bottom. I therefore presume the 172 is different assembly to mk1's.

Beaten!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Yep, im confident this doesnt remove.

Even more pissed off now as i bought this in good faith that they were useable, but as you can see the thread is knackered and I was under assumption that I could replace the cv joint.

So here are my options

a) buy new driveshaft - EXPENSIVE
b) see if I can helicoil the thread
c) downsize the nut thread size by machining the thread down to a lower size

Anyone see any issues with option c? I think this is my best option to save this driveshaft?

Ill keep an eye out mat.

Theres one on ebay at the moment but its £95 (o/s though). Too expensive.

Ill take this shaft into an engineers this week and see what he says.

There is a circlip in there that needs spread apart as said and then they should seperate. Sometimes require a few chaps with the hammer as they can become seized :/

Would be really helpful if someone could show pics if they have them of the circlip?

Remember this is a 172 driveshaft.

I will show my arse in HMV shop window on preston highstreet all weekend if someone can prove to me theres a circlip in there.

I must be going blind if there is.

For future reference. Although in this pic you can see the clip, I still have not got the joint off even with hammering it, but I will get it eventually.

I had a similar problem with a mk1 shaft, no clip whatsoever, got busy with a grinder in the end :firedevil:
