View Full Version : Guess the BHP contest
As some of you know, I have had a bit of tuning on the horizon for little Willy 217 for a few months. Tomorrow (assuming I don't have any more last minute problems) should be the day it goes off to Stan (Craig) at AP Developments where it will go under the surgeons knife for a bit of lift and tuck :twisted:
Before work is started, Craig has said he will measure the BHP so we can see the increase, if any (lol) in torque and power.
I am having a little contest to see who can guess the current power my car is producing at the flywheel (subject to calculation if necessary if power is measured at wheels) BEFORE work is done.
To give you a fighting chance, I shall list current engine related mods:
F7R 714 block, about 92000 miles
F7R 700 recently refurbished head
ITG panel filter
Gunner 180 chip with 7100 limiter
Standard (heat wrapped) exhaust and inlet manifold
Standard (heat wrapped) downpipe
Decat pipe
Straight through unsilenced 2" Supersprint mid section
Magnex backbox
Other minor details, but which some super techie people may ask:
New Pipercross oil filter
3 BAR oil pressure at idle when cold
10w 40 Semi Synthetic oil
So...roll up roll up. 1 guess each and you may include torque if you are feeling confident :D
Assuming Craig has no problems with me doing it, I may do the same for the 'post-surgery' results as well.
It will be interesting to see what the Wobbamobile has been pushing out till now.

there's a massive guestimation in measuring wheel power itself mate, it's far from scientific, alas obtaining a flywheel figure from it is the least of our accuracy worries.
My guess is ~155bhp

pretty much the same setup as mine and my results read between 168 and 172 atf.
so for the middle ground i say 170bhp. and i await my wobbahug!

aye, but your still reading from the guesstimation of the wheel figure, then guesstimating even more to get the fly. ;)
Thats my point pal... The adding a fixed % to obtain a flywheel figure is the relatively accurate part.

I'd say 176.8bhp @ the fly. No idea at the wheels. 145.87457.

Well, Stans got my car now and assuming he has not already ebayed my car off should RR it on Monday before the box gets removed for my new diff to go in.

Yea thanks Evo, that's not bad for a relatively standard engine with a bit of mileage.
This was not a 'look at me and my uber power with cheapo engine mods' contest it was a purely scientific exercise, which I thought would be of interest to some and a bit of fun :)
Is that 4 or 5 bhp Stan, or four-fifths of a bhp off in total? There is always some inaccuracy with rolling roads and some of you out there may have built this into your guestimates, so the figure of 152.1 stands as is.
So...the winner of the Wobbahug at FCS is (drum roll).....

sorry, meant 4 or 5 bhp. I could tweak the software and get it a smidge closer, but as it stands its on the real side of an accurate figure, which is the best you can hope for a rolling road.

Yup, tbh I'd prefer a conservative figure. It's the results car vs car that I like more where the relative lightness (compared to modern lard-wagons) of 'teh Willyams' gives the bhp/ton killer blow 8)
Mines quite light for a daily driver, so it feels quite quick most days, and with these minor mods you are bolting on for me it should be even more interesting!
Really looking forward to the LSD as well as power tbh, we will have to go test it out on some good roads when I pop back over! I will be taking it easy though mind, I hear it takes a bit of getting used to and last thing I wanna do is stack it into the side of a Welsh mountain due to unfamiliar roads, mental power and a whacky diff!
You know what contest I'll be running next though don't you Craig... :lol: No pressure :wink:

didnt someone on c16v make 139bhp@fly with a gunnerchip on a near std 2.0 engine?
probably, unless the chip is tailor made it wont ever be right.
my black car made a .5 second diffrence over 1/4 mile with the gunnerchip (the only thing that was changed)
down to the raised limiter i expect.
Didn't have the wideband plugged in so couldn't record AFR.
Thinking about it I should have done a run with a STD Williams chip in,,, oh well!

Not bad!
Considering I see manufacturers of modded ECU's claim 10% hike for N/A cars....tests like this prove it all utter wank. My insurance co. thought I was full of shit when I said all these mods equate to an ABSOLUTE MAX of 10bhp increase.
Tbh, this megane block may be a more reliable unit and better pressure etc than my Willy but it felt like it was dragging its feet a little compared to my Willy engine (just before it blew up :lol: )

well yeah....no point having 170 at the fly and only 100 at the wheels now is there ;)
