Hi
I have a 1994 williams, done only 49k , the timing belt although checked a few years ago has not being changed since new.
This might be stating the obvious, but I guess replacement is long over due and I am asking for trouble if I don’t get it done soon.

Rang Renault and they are quoting £820+vat to replace. Apparently the belt price is £191+vat.

That seems a bit steep to me, but not having a load of tools and know how I do not fancy trying it myself.
Has anyone got any advice, on if the belt can be acquired cheaper elsewhere or if a normal high street mechanic can be trusted to replace it?

Thanks Nick

don't go to Renault...!!!  you'll pay full dealer rates and I doub't there's many technicians left now who have knowledge of a Williams...

Depends how people price the work, some say to take the engine out, others not. It's a tight job with the engine still in but can be done...

You should only be looking at around £110 + vat for the kit plus fitting... a good independant garage should only charge you £350ish + vat...

If you are handy with the spanners it can be done on your own...

i've heard of cars with original cam belts before, one lad had a valver at 18 years old with 140k on it and original belt!!lol! and to be honest if its in good nick its probably last, but it is a risk and i'd get it done

cam belt can be done a lot easier than that, £80 for kit from GSF car parts i think, make sure you get tensioner and idler pullies done at same time (should be in a full kit)

high street garage could do it but may not want to, but there must be someone off the forums willing to do it for you, and i can imagine on a low mileage car like yours should be a dream to do, hopefully no knackered bolts or anything!!

There's a good independent renault garage based in North Camp (near Farnborough so not too far from you) called Renault speed and they've got experience with the 16v and williams. Probably worth a call if you don't want to have a go.

Hi mate,

I contacted my renaault dealer and they quoted 299 inc vat. I thought that was reasonable.

However, I am sure they are not aware of the difficulty of it. I will ring again to confirm and if they do go ahead, will make sure its a fixed price!

K-tec will do it for £155+ VAT, based down the M3 in Verwood

Hi might as well keep this thread running.
Need another belt done.

RenaultPartsDirect have a Renault Clio Williams Cam Belt Kit for £104, which looks right, but it mentions its for a F7R 2.0 Petrol Engine

Is this part good for a williams 1? and is the price good?

I thought the engine for the williams 1 was a F7P ?

also they have a water pump for £68, again for F7R engine
Again Is this part good for a williams 1? and is the price good?

cheers
Nick

The Williams is F7R but the cambelts & water pumps are the exact same parts for the F7R and F7P

Buy that cambelt kit as it's a bargain at that price & you wont find a decent pattern part for less, as for the water pump you can get a better price for the exact same item elsewhere https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175097938677?fits=Cars+Type%3AWilliams%7CModel%3AC lio&epid=249250255&hash=item28c4a682f5:g:00EAAOSwjyJh1vpy&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0NI7zDI1mKmXPNpqPNQrda6vPd8MD %2FAdILXiqn%2B0LLWYGaHN4V0O6ekiEEaCeluqY%2Fc1OleRg 0msDr2YSePenXpo79Wo3MTD1ou%2BMnBRxZ0FTbP49JPpEOwYr VpRPBj6OyZT%2BWwLsGrEC%2Fb5JRLl48yULFvCp0KENKbhfr5 8pvffdEAjJEsVTvZW4ZEE4SsEwfR%2BNOefGyOV1B%2BmGytyy cJRH5921zxA3zGWV4Y%2FDu2VJQ9eMsVyUcJxgt1rAubyVvTZI gRpRG%2BLP4Kp4JhKenc%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR6yJjor0YQ

Sadly the cam belt kit is now out of stock at RPD.
Got any other places with reasonable price?

At that price I'm not surprised they ran out tbh

You've got the right part number, ebay & Autodoc is probably your best bet, just make sure you get a Gates kit as they're OEM

ok thanks so Gates are the best if you can't get Renault?

Gates is what you get from Renault anyway

Sorry Paddy one last question.
Is there anything else I should replace /change at the same time, other than the water pump and Camp belt kit?

A new alternator belt as it's got to come off anyway & that's about it tbh, at a push maybe the alternator belt tensioner but only if the 1 on the car already is looking a bit old, crusty, chewed up or if it's noisy

Sorry about this but there seems to be some confusion about the cam belt kit part number that is good for my 1994 williams 1.
Using my number plate and giving it to Renault they reckon 7701469775
But RPD reckon 7701471866 and you seemed to think that number was correct too.

Any ideas why there is this confusion?
Because I have found a genuine 7701471866 part quite cheap.

Because your Renault dealer is useless like the vast majority of them when it comes to older cars, trust RPD, they know their stuff when it comes to Mk1 Clio's

Renault also have an annoying habit of randomly changing or superceding part numbers so trust RPD to have the correct & most up to date part number

Many thanks again for all that information.
Have acquired all the parts now via ebay.

Unfortunately, my regular mechanic took one look at the engine and said he doesn't want to do the cam belt change now because he recons not enough room to do it without taking out the engine.

Any ideas who might do the job some where in the south?
I'm not far from Heathrow.

I will try Renault speed in North camp and ktec. And see what they say.

Nickysteveo

Renault speed don't want to do it, say the car is too old for them.

Waiting on replies from Renault main dealer and ktec

I have someone doing the cam belt at last.
And apparently they need a fan belt idler.

Do you know where I can get one of these for my williams 1?
Cheers
