I nearly got my engine out today but the one thing that stopped me was the speedo cable in the back of the gearbox. It looks like the speedo cable to me as it has a white plastic insert around it. Any ideas on how to remove the cable without damaging it please?

Cheers
Dave

Also, does the white plastic surround stay in the gearbox (i.e. I shouldn't be pulling it).

There should be a black plastic bit too that you squeeze together and pull the cable out of the gearbox?

They can be very tight sometimes, it's caused by a build up of crap in the hole.
Give it a good soak in WD40, then soak it some more.
Try pulling it out and if you get no joy, get a little punch down the side of the black plastic bit and give the collar a knock down, this should free it up.

Done it! - Wow! that was tough. I think it was the trick with the punch that helped in the end. If I ever meet you Mat I owe you a drink for that one :)
