I thought I'd share the news that this weeks Auto Express has a 27 page pull out of the best 20 hot hatches ever. The Williams came in at No:1. Makes me smile a little more when I look out of the window. :D

I'm amazed that the Citroen Visa GTI is always omitted from these car mag surveys. They were essentially a 205 GTI, same engine, running gear ect, just had a different shell. Granted they looked like a shed but I owned one years ago and christ it was good, poss better than the 205 as it was lighter. Maybe a bit too obscure and unknown for these surveys though...

It's not just that the Williams is an amazing drivers car and feels special, it looks stunning imo, (although dated now, I like retro!) it's exclusive, has history, the list goes on. It turns heads, all the others just don't do anything for me, they don't stand out, I couldn't imagine anyone asking about a 172/182 on a petrol station forecourt, perhaps maybe a V6, but it's hardly in the same category. I had someone offer to buy mine in a traffic jam on the M6 a few years ago, it's never happened in any other car I have owned and I couldn't imagine that happening with any of the other Clios. I do like the Trophy though, been in Jamies loads of times, but still doesn't stand out enough for me, still a bit too common and they should have beefed it up a bit like they did with the williams

26-01-2010, 17:50
I like the Trophy too, the looks however are not daring enough for it to really stand out. The blue/gold of the Williams is easier to identify

Very true. It would probably happen in a V6 but that is a £10k+ supercar.

I once had a guy taking photos of my car at a petrol station a couple of years back :D

Jamie.
26-01-2010, 19:18
That's it, you're ****ing paying for pool tonight Mr Thompson! ;)

However, no one has ever asked about my car at a petrol station and I can see what you mean about it not standing out as much as the Williams. But, it's very difficult to make a car stand out as much as that when it was so "contrasty".

I know no one will agree, but imo the Trophy is a better car. It handles better and as standard is quicker. However, what it doesn't have is the same feeling. For a Clio it's odd to say it, but it does have a sense of occassion (the Williams) when driven. I think it's because it was so bespoke. The only car I can really think of which has or will have that same feeling is/are: Ford Focus RS mk1, Escort Cosworth. The Trophy is sort of lifeless in that sense, has no real personality. The Trophy is epic fun and will defy what you think possible. When thrashing it, it will really put a smile on your face, however that's it. You have to be going like **** and using it what it was made for to get that sense of pleasure and with a Williams you don't really have to do that. You can just drive along.

If I was having two cars then potentially I would be having a Williams and something else. But when it's just the one it won't ever be. I would discuss these reasons but having read various replies in the CS thread I don't think it would be, more a "you're wrong" reply so I won't bother.

No offence to 1*2 owners, but I cant tell the difference between them or the standard poverty spec ones unless I see the 182 twin exhausts at the back.

Pulled up at some lights on the way home the other day, and a couple of guys pulled along side in a nice MR2. Bloke opens window and shouts something like 'Is that a WILLIAMS!?' I say ye, they both give me the thumbs up and yell 'its ******* lovely mate!! Rare as rockin' horse shit!', big grins on their faces. I said something complimentary about their MR2 in return. Made me smile :)

You wont get that with a 1*2.

I think all these plantpot Clio 172/182/197 owners are totally missing the point. Their car cannot be put into best hot hatch of all time due to it being allbeit a couple of years old.

Things have moved on crazily within the car world in the last 15 years, and for a Williams to be still in the mix with modern hatches 15 years on shows what a CLASS car it is.

A trophy for example will only be able to be taken into consideration when it has stood the test of time. It was a review on best hot hatch of ''ALL TIME'', not within the last 2 years.

We'll see how the trophies and 172's etc fair in 15 years time against the hot hatch world then. Thats when they will have stood the test of time and be able to be considered on of the best.

It may be that I was just insane and reckless back then, but yes, I would say for me at the time, it was more fun than my Williams. Back then I didn't give a shit and ragged about like a loon, if I was like that now and my Willy less precious to me I would probably have just as much fun...BUT I remember at the time selling my valver thinking how much more fun the R5 was compared to it.
