View Full Version : Proper technique for cornering at optimum speed?

Can any trackday regulars confirm the best way to go round the bend?!

Obviously you slow down on the approach and I think you floor it as you come out of the bend. What do you do in between - just keep going as fast as possible without crashing?!

Are you supposed to keep as close to the inside as possible to reduce the distance travelled or the outside so you can go faster on a less tight bend?

Stay on the outside as late as you can. Turn-in smooth. Clip apex. Get back to outside as quick as you can. If tyres are squealing all the way though, it's probably as fast as the car can go.

Smooth and progressive is fastest and cheepest (not destroying tyres etc) - for accel, braking and steering...well for round a track that is..!

Handbrake shouldnt be used even on the pits to eliminate pad transfer onto the disc.

Only word of advise is to drive within yourself and build up slowly...

The idea is to be smooth and consistent. To be smooth it's better practice to always use the least sharpest angle into and out of a corner, so always (on track anyway) go into a bend from the far side of the track, aim for the apex as you turn in and once clipping the apex let the car drift out to the other side. This means you are turning the steering the least amount, putting less strain on you and the car, and being able to maintain forward momentum to the maximum.

Rally driving uses the same principal, but with rallying there are other things to consider such as terrain and manoeuvres such as the Scandinavian flick, something I use frequently on the motorway :D

Try and get braking done in a straight line , then just before turning in get back on the throttle a bit (just enought to maintain your speed that will be scrubbed off by turning) to balance the car out a bit. Hold the throttle there until you get to the apex, then progressively bring in more as you unwind the steering.

By keeping the car balanced it will enable you to carry a lot more speed through the apex, which the secret to a quick lap time. Unless you're Schumacher, then you can drive into the apex on the brakes with the back end dancing around.

Another good tip, from the great Sir Jackie Stewart 8) don't put your foot onto the throttle until you know you don't need to take it off :wink:
