View Full Version : AST Solid suspension top mount OFFICIAL WC GROUP BUY
Yep! IT'S ON!
Sick of the groaning from your front suspension?
Looking for better handling?
Tired of girls laughing at your lack of negative camber and no bling under the old bonnet?
WELL DESPAIR NO MORE!!!! The Official Williamsclio AST solid suspension top mount group buy IS HERE!!!!
Yes, you too can join the gang and enjoy the benefit of adjustable camber with the added benefit of castor adjustment. These mounts will also help reduce the groaning and moaning noises many of us get with our OEM top mounts, and if you are like me with AVO coilovers, be able to FINALLY rid yourself of that annoying and geometry-destroying phat gap they leave between the suspension turret and final top mount (I think)!
These do NOT require drilling into the turret.
Hurrah!
Ok, still here? Then here's the deal...
Kamracing, in association with Powerstation and AST, are providing us with a group buy opportunity which has been worked out by myself and Willy Lover.
Please read here for Kam Racing's specs:
http://www.kamracing.co.uk/renault-clio-mk1-257/bushes-mounts-780/ast-solid-adjustable-topmounts-renault-clio-mk1-2504.html
Also, before asking any questions you may want to refer to this page that was set up to discuss the idea:
http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37607
There are numerous comments and links in the above post which may help you decide if you are in, or if you fail at life and don't want to join the group buy.
Prices have been confirmed as follows:
£149.5 for 10+
£138 for 20+
£126.5 for 30+
UK Mainland delivery on these is £8 (excludes Scottish highlands)
Ok...so your sold. 'What now?' you ask...
Well, stick yourself down on the list and state after your username what suspension you want these for. If there are any issues with fitment then they can be modified to fit. I know most will fit as standard.
Once we have a good idea of who is in we can ascertain our discount and items can be paid for and sent out to you!
Here are some pics I have shamelessly stolen:

Just to add it doesn't matter on the strut type now as they are machined for a universal fitment..

Well, I can actually feel my AVO's wobbling about on occasion. Everyone knows the issue with the top mounts not sitting properly, so in my case that's one good reason to change. I've also done research on many forums about solid top mounts for other cars and got some very good feedback.
Also, in my case, they will suit my engine bay colour scheme and give me more fun adjustments that I wouldn't normally have with camber etc :D
Do these fit to cup racer front suspension???
Do these fit to cup racer front suspension???
i have emailed Kam racing about this
they are waiting until the boys from AST (or powerstation, can't remember who) come back off a weeks holiday so they can ask them
until then its a bit of a grey area
i dont see a reason why they won't, as the cup racer stuff is of a standard design isn't it? i heard rumours about the dampers being taken off a renault van?!?!? :?

Cup Dampers are mono tube so def not from a van. In theory these should work as the std top mounts fit. But std top mounts fit all coilovers but these AST top mounts dont...
Confusing really...

The first 20 sets of mounts are coming into the country on either the 24th or the 28th and will be sent out on a first come first served basis regarding full payment. The rest are just being anodised at the moment so will be sent over very shortly..

I actually don't know at this stage. I think asking people who have run them may be better equipped to answer.

just a quick update. The delivery to the UK is being delayed due to the weather over here and on the continent (A lot of couriers aren't running at the moment due to the risk of damage to their vans)
I'll let you all know as soon as they come in.
Thank you! I was assuming the weather and Xmas/New Year hangover's may be having an impact :)
Can't wait to get them. I've just spotted the AST adjustable mounts in EVO magazine no less on Project Veyrog! They mention dialing in some negative camber...that's what we want :D
anyone found out what the camber is that you can run + / - ?
anyone found out what the camber is that you can run + / - ?
Not yet, and without taking it somewhere after fitting them that can measure it I can't be sure. I will be doing so though at a later date. I doubt they have the same range as camber bolts though, hard to say!

is the 'Zero' camber setting easily identified?
is the 'Zero' camber setting easily identified?
Apparently, as you adjust them (loosen the top three mount bolts and turn the top) with the front of the car jacked up you can visibly see the camber change.
What I would recommend is take a measurement BEFORE fitting these and adjust accordingly when they have been fitted.
Personally I will be taking my car to a professional set up company eventually to have all this sorted for me. Not sure when though as I may be having this LSD fitted and adjustment to my driveshaft as well so no point till after that really.

Minimum camber. Bear in mind f0xy's car has adjustable camber on his struts as well though. He said with the top mounts at maximum he tried to dial in max camber with the bolts (FK Highsport/Slotted Holes) but it fouled on the springs.
can they put a scale on top of the strut top like other top mounts have ?
can they put a scale on top of the strut top like other top mounts have ?
Not familiar with scales on mounts business! Have to ask someone else I am afraid.
Northy,
They adjust the camber and castor through the cam action within the strut top
So there should be no reason why you couldnt put a mark on the mount in permanent marker etc then put corresponding marks on the strut top with values
You'l just need a alignment tool to work out where the marks need to be
I could sort a sticker out for the top of the strut if a few people want them (remember though that different struts could give different values due to design and manufacturing tolerances)
yes been back through the tread and had a look, will wait and see how these go on members cars. Might treat 0171 to a set when its all up and running

we've had a few people contact us who are wanting to get in on the group buy. With the VAT increase and it not being on the same manufacturing run we won't be able to give exactly the same price as we gave for the main group buy but it's very close at £144 + delivery..
payment can be made in full here:
http://www.kamracing.co.uk/club-discounts-63/group-buys-68/ast-group-buy-full-payment-2649.html
We've just had feedback that OE dampers need a bit of extra machining on one of the collars to make for an easier fit. If you have already ordered and plans to use them with OE dampers can you email salesteam @ kamracing.co.uk (or contact us through our shop (http://www.kamracing.co.uk/contact-us.html)) letting us know and include the name you used on the order or your order id. We'll then make sure this additional machining is done for you before we send it out to you..
The first 20 mounts still haven't come into the country yet but the snow seems to be clearing up so it shouldn't be long now..
Apparently the first sets should be sent out on the 20th Jan to us...hopefully.
Don't forget the Cliosport lot have a load going to them as well.

Willy Lover did a lot of the work as well, I just spammed loads :D
careful of the new style top nuts, I found they fouled the inner part of the anodised mount! have a look at the old type on page 1.
UPDATE: There have been issues with the new style nut supplied by AST. Kam Racing have responded:
We can get the old style nuts still. They were changed as some people were having issues with not getting enough turns of the nut onto the thread. If anyone wants the old style nuts send us an email and we'll sort you out..
http://www.kamracing.co.uk/index.php/contacts/
Some people seem to have fitted the coilover version of the kit to OE style suspension, so will need a differently machined collar and don't need to use the AST coilover spring top hat (which is the large black piece) as the OE type suspension part will be used..
THe issue with the new nuts is partly that they foul the mounts and scratch them and also one or two hapve reported they have worked loose.

This is a way of stopping the damage to your new mounts. Chamfer the edges off the new style nut as seen here. It will work.
Other than that, happy to report apart from the nut damaging my mounts the adjustments you can do are proving worthwhile for me with AVO's.

Yes, did they not include them as well? The old style dont fit my AVO's.
I've actually taken the mounts and AVO's off now as I have found another design flaw which causes them to knock. I'll send them off to be replaced shortly.
i need the new style nut for my cup shocks. i don't have enough treat now.
do i need the original bearing to be able to steer or will the topmount twist itself. My topmount twists extremely heavy but dont have any room left to add a bearing.

We were sent a load of new style nuts by AST and it turns out these were the wrong ones which is why they fouled the alloy.
We now are getting in a batch of the proper nuts. These have a thread all the way down and have a slight lip to raise it away from the bearing to allow it to move.
Its a shame that such a simple group buy turned into such a cock up  but we are trying to make sure everyone has got a product that fits...

im going to buy some avo coilovers soon, and fit the solid mounts at the same time. is it worth the trouble? what problems did you have? and did you have to mod them?
thanks

The old style nuts did not have thread all the way I dont think, the ones they sent me dont anyway.
The old style nut wont work with AVO's unless you use the old style top mount...there is a design difference that stops the old style nut reaching the thread on the AVO struts.
I've modded mine but not been able to test them as my damn car has been stuck at APD for 2 months.

I have the exact same issue with my Ledas.
This makes it quite difficult to make sure everything is tight and secure as putting the wrench on the nut will damage the finish on the mount.
I hope i managed to securely fit mine - but i am not overly happe with it.
Not testet yet though....
Hello, mine have come loose a little before, but I tightened them and they were fine till I took them off about 3 months ago.
Just had a call from Kam racing. They are sending out replacement parts including new anodised bit to me and a new design for the UFO piece as they call it.
Was a long call trying to explain the problem, but hopefully this will help.

Grrrr...the new bits are better but still not enough thread to secure the old style bolts. having to used my mashed up ones still. Lets hoe what they have done is enough to stop them knocking or else I am melting them down for scrap!
By the sounds of it then these are not worth the aggro? I have Gaz GHA coilovers they should be simple to fit onto shouldnt they?
Also are these still available for £145+delivery?

Thread in the top hat / nut supplied with the AST's.

there gonna be another group buy of these wobba?
Unlikely, unless I get another Mk1 ;)
Need to get the design right first as from what im hearing there still not right...! Poor show if you ask me.
The basic problem for me is the securing nut on the top. It contacts the anodised top mount, undoes itself, damages the anodised finish and eventually causes knocking noises. I carry a pair of mole grips in the car specifically to tighten them up.
I use AVO's.
It seems to be the thread on the AVO's needs to be longer as the nuts barely go down far enough and in my case dont clear the top mount enough....old design nut wont even tighten.
Anyone with Gaz GHA fitment coilovers care to comment? Interested in getting a set
Does anyone know what style nut i will need to specify when i order?
Not sure. If its OE thread size then will be ok. Dontknow about type of nut, I have both I think.
Is it worth the Money in your opinionn as its quite a big outlay when my money could be spent elsewhere.
I got mine quite a bit cheaper than what they are asking for them now.
I love mine now, but I like changing the way my car behaves regularly. Camber and caster tweaking is fun and can give better road holding and the way the car feels on the road/track.
I got mine to combat a wallowly feeling I got from the AVO's with OE mounts. It worked.
I didn't get this wallow feeling off my other non-adjustable coilovers, so dont need them when I used those.
Ill probably get a set just for the camber and castor adjustment. Also does anyone know how much camber you can dial in i would only go about 3 degrees max of negative camber.
Going to order mine very soon :)
Cool.
Well, I think the maximum adjustment for camber is about 1.5-1.7 ish either way, so a total of about 3-3.4ish.
The best thing for me, apart from fiddling about with settings, is a more solid feel on turns etc. I dont know why but the AVO's felt wobbly and inconsistent, especially on poor roads, but these helped make them more stable.
sweet definatly getting these but f*k me they aint cheap £144 + VAT is like £172.80 without delivery FML lol. The link they set up last year for the stragglers (me) who didnt get in on the group buy doesnt work so i dropped them an email to see whats what.
P.S Wobba you got you wheels refurbed yet?
