Got some play in the linkage where it bolts to the box, theres a little metal sleeve and a rubberised grommit thing there normally? i'm missing the grommit so using a rubber washer instead but theres still play

anyone got any top tips to remove this?

Rubberised grommit - do you mean the olive item in this picture?

Use a stainless steel washer instead of rubber washer or use a new metal bushing with supporting collar (as I use in my short throw shifter and gear linkage stiffener kit). I guess a good turner makes this bushing for a bottle of beer :). Or I have one, but it would be expensive for you (£ 8-10) due to the shipping cost (I live in Hungary).
The red bushing in this picture (with the genuine small gear linkage):

A video about this bushing: Gear linkage stiffener (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzBHwYerdTM)

Hope this help.

Sorry for the late response.

The left one is the prototype, it was ribbed but it's not compulsory. If the turner could make so rib like the genuine that would be better (my turner could do vertical rib only). The right one is the genuine for comparison:

In some cases the welding may be wrong (too high) like in this picture therefore it must be ground down:
