TalkingFish.
These pictures have been posted before so apologies   But I am a great believer in powder coating ~~ It is hard wearing, durable ~~ and covers a multitude of sins    ie noe time consuming rubbing down etc, just pay your money and get the job done

Same as the others have said above... Powdercoating is the way to go. Not expensive and a very durable finish that should stop it rusting again for many years to come - I don't plan on taking it off the car again in a hurry! Here's how mine looks now:

Looks amazing^^^

Did you just marry that up to see what it looked like or did you actually attach all ancillaries with the subframe attached bare like that?

Is that lower strut brace worth it? Notice any difference? Suppose its difficult to go back and try and remember what it was like without it...

I did the marrying up in the house first:

But it was then all too heavy to offer up to the car and bolt it on like that so took all the bits off again and just bolted the subframe alone on first  Then bolted the other bits back onto it one by one. Was quite an enjoyable weekend finally putting bits back onto the car, rather than the months of stripping it all off, cleaning, painting, etc.

Will be hard to tell what effect the lower brace has - it's been over 3 years since I have driven the car and there isn't much that I haven't altered in that time - shocks, widetrack, poly bushes, manual rack are all going to make it feel quite different too!

Ive just been quoted £80 to get my subframe powdercoated.

Phone round a few places today locally.

Is this a reasonable price?

£80 doesn't sound too unreasonable, but I would think you might be able to get it a bit cheaper. IIRC mine was about £60, but it was a couple of years ago and prices will no doubt have risen slightly since then.

Ha ha! That picture could have just as well been taken minutes ago - the result is just the same, althogh it isn't much 'proof' of anything as the car has not been driven in all that time  It's quite a thick covering though so I would think it would last many years when I am using the car again.

So what would be the ideal fnish for the protection to last as long as possible?

Or is powdercoating as good as it gets?

I think powdercoating is pretty much as good as it gets - a very hard glossy finish that I think it would be hard for the rust to attack. I guess there might be some new-fangled covering with a plastic content that might resist chipping better, but I'm not aware of anything commonly available.

Thanks for your pics guys - some "iteresting" colour choices there but some high quality engine bays there...!! :D

I've posted some pics of mine since painting in the photos section.... enjoy!
