View Full Version : Why do the wheelarches always rust???

I can vaguely remember from college about how rust forms, differering electrical properties of metals, add moisture etc etc...or something like that anyway. It was a long time age....

But does anyone know the root cause of why its always the rear wheelarches that rust so badly? Is it a water trap, bad sealing, or what?

Don't ships have a dirty great lump of zinc called a 'sacrificial anode' which corrodes first so the rest of the ship doesn't?

In which case, if I weld a chunk of Zinc to my Willy, will it stop my wheelarches from rusting?!!!

No, I didn't think so :-)

one of the main reasons would be the rear wheels throwing water ,mud, salt etc off the road acting as an abrasive .

is he retarded or something ? it took him almost a week to
get rid of some poxy surface rust using posh "rust killer"
this takes me 5 minutes (including a cuppa ) using a knotted wire cup
on the good old angle grinder

That looks amazing, but rust is a cancer, once it starts there's no stopping it?

Always wanted to try the BH stuff but my car has so much fooking rust, lol

I take it that it's better than Dinitrol?

You basically hit the nail on the head, electrochemical process.

Cathodic protection would work on a clio but would you really want to bolt a massive piece of zinc to a hatchback?

Prevention is better than cure, regularly clean the arch as dirt builds up which stores moisture against the bodywork, underseal the car every couple of years, especially the arches as they're hit by stones etc etc

a well known method for preventation is brushing used engine oil.
you can usually see the affect on the subframes/engine bay after an
engine removal . you wipe the oil & dirt mixture off and it reveals
unraped factory paint .

alot of the classic for boys go for the zeebart (spelling) approach..

Theres a place up near me in brierley hill that dips shells, dont quote me but it entails about three different dips.............cost 5to700 pound

and you can leave the shell outside after its done, elements wont harm it!

Nice... That would actually be cost effective if you had the arches done then stripped it down to just the shell. £5-700 would cover just the rear arches in a couple of years time going the normal route! lol

Just looking at this on Google.

Can the process be done in the UK? I wonder how it compares to Dinitrol, etc.
