View Full Version : Change the gear knob
Anyone know how to do this?
I just bought a brand new one, trying to work out how to get it on...
Should just screw on, guess you already worked that out. If when you took the old one off, you didn't have to unscrew it, then the threaded sleeve is still on the stick and needs unscrewing.
I gave up in the end and just swapped the blue plastic centres

Yeah I think I'll do the same - this new one doesn't look as good as the original on there - it's a little smaller too...
The one on there looks like leather, but this new one is very foamy is you know what I mean... Was yours the same?
I can't remember mate it was ages ago now, if you do swap them remember to glue it into place or will rattle like hell, when mine did!
Hehe, nice one will do mate...

it just pushes on the shaft is splined its a tough one to get off i twisted the old one off then used a piece off wood wrapped in cloth and covered the top of your new knob and drifted it on with soft mallet

pm me the guide! :D
Had my gear knob stolen
Bought new one but cannot work out how to fit it. All I have on the gear stick is the splined bit on the top.
I read your comments but surely is this how it is fitted with a hammer?

The gear knob sits on the end of the gear stick which is knurled. So it grips extra hard. Especially if its been on 10 yrs +. I replaced mine 2 weeks ago. I got it off by wedging a plain screw driver under the gear knob itself. If you do this be careful not to damage the plastic part for the reverse gear. Mines basically broke apart leaving a plastic cap, which sits in the gear knob itself. A pair of pliers to grip it and wrigle it clock and anti clockwise then it came off.
Ok. But how do you put the new one on.
The gear knob itself has a hole in it while the gear stick has a plastc fitting on top which is to big to fit into the hole and is also tapered.
I have attached a photo.
Help please....!
^^^ you got the plastic bit of the old knob stuck on the stick .
either take it off or take the plastic bit of the gearknob and glue on .
Arh!
How does the plastic bit come off the stick? Twist or just pull?
I did try but didnt want to break anything.
Thank you

the end of the shaft is knurled so if that is the inner from the original knob then u dont need it if you have a new one so u can cut it off or get a good pipe wrench and twist off ur new one will be a tight fit i covered mine really well then used a wooden drift and careful used a mallet to knock it on

You need to pull that plastic piece of the stick. Pair of pliers or mole grips thats what I used. Once you grip it. twist it about clock or anti clockwise whilst pulling it up. Be carefull as when it comes of you don't won't to hit yourself in the face with it!!
Sorted. Thank you for your help.
Cheers
